A young man is torn by divided loyalty in this hard-edged urban drama. Reggie (Ja Rule) was raised by his father (Giancarlo Esposito) after a violent incident in the neighborhood where he lived with his mother (Pam Grier). While Reggie has been encouraged to take up a life of crime by his older friend and street mentor J-Bone (Ving Rhames), his father thinks Reggie has a good head for business and urges him to use his smarts rather than his gun. When Reggie's father is murdered, J-Bone takes the young man under his wing, but as a consequence of their friendship, Reggie is linked to the killing of a local preacher -- whose daughter (Tatyana Ali) is Reggie's girlfriend. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
but not as good as it could have been. I pleased to see Ja Rule trying to legitimize himself in this drama but he needs more practice. I was surprised to see Ving Rhames playing such a dark character. The movie assumes you understand the need for JaRule to suffer black outs; it could have been more clear. It leaves you hanging because Ving & his crew are into something but it never actually tells you where his funds are coming from & then out the clear there's a gun fight & Ving's love interest goes out in a blaze of glory & it leaves you there thinking "What the .... " The end is a hodge podge, the viewer gets to see Ving's tortured sould routine (one can suppose it is because the love of is life is dead, but again this is purely speculateion)& then suddenly he's gunned down by a sniper because a detective finally picked the right clue and did the right thing.
I wouldn't say a must see, but I was nicely suprised by Ving and Ja Rule. A little predictable at times, but a nice twist at the end that makes you want to watch it over to see what you may have missed.
this movie was huh!@#$ and further more what the!@#$%^&&*...and it was also*&^%$...dont waste your rental it comes on B.E.T. all the time...if you have 110 minutes to waste then this is the movie for you....
I guess with casting Ja Rule as the lead, you can't really expect more of this movie. Ving Rhames usually does well playing these type-cast roles but I also wasn't too pleased with his performance either. The story line starts out good, diminishes halfway through, then ties together a good part of the plot in the end. The overall direction, acting, and plot of the movie was extremely disappointing.
