Professor Julius F. Kelp (Jerry Lewis) is an addle-brained, absent-minded chemistry instructor always incurring the wrath of the university administration by continually blowing up the classroom laboratory. The shy guy has his eyes on the student body of Stella (Stella Stevens). When a football-playing bully humiliates him, Kelp tries to concoct a chemical to help him gain physical strength and stature. The potion turns him into the handsome, hard-edged nightclub singer named Buddy Love. The mild-mannered professor's alter ego becomes a self-absorbed campus favorite at the Purple Pit, a hangout for hip cats and kittens. Stella falls for the enigmatic entertainer who wows the crowd with his jazzy, breezy delivery and cool demeanor. Buddy mixes it up with the bartender (Buddy Lester), who is instructed on how to mix the latest drinks by the professor-turned-party animal. The drawback of the potion is that it wears off at the most embarrassing an inopportune times for Buddy, turning him back into the helpless Kelp. Buddy performs at the annual student dance, and while on the dais, the elixir starts to wear off. The students and staff watch in amazement as he changes back into the professor. He gives an impassioned plea that people must learn to like themselves before others can like them in return. Stella still wants to be the teacher's pet, and the two make future plans together. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

There is something in this movie that I like that 's altogether different than other reviews. This movie shows Jerry Lewis as the lover-boy that he was never portrayed to be but actually always was (at least he was to me). He is so s e x y as Buddy Love, a little rough to the women, but so commanding and manly. God, they don't make men like that anymore. Dean Martin didn't have anything on Jerry Lewis - although I do think Dean Martin is great too (he's not in this show - that's just a sidebar).

Not good for really small children as the Lewis character goes through a somewhat scary change at one point and neither the professor or his alterego are particularly likeable characters. Otherwise, probably worth watching once. A little nutty, a little slow at times but good for a chuckle or two...or one.

This movie is a classic! I don't know why these other people didn't like it - maybe because it is an older movie. But still - I think it's very funny and Lewis gives a great performance. He was Jim Carry before Carry was born!

He made this movie (writing, directing and starring in it) after the split with Dean Martin, and apparently was trying to show audiences he could do a serious character. Unfortunately that character turned out rather unpleasant -- a scientist who concocts his own amphetamine, propelling him to arrogantly heap witty insults on everyone else. The plot falls apart because we are supposed to believe that this makes him irresistably popular. Not a family movie to watch with the kids. Die-hard JL fans will love this movie; everyone else will wonder why they rented it.

In one stunning moment, the Nutty Professor is transformed into . . . Jerry Lewis. This movie is just simply smarmy (but not perhaps as infantile as some of Lewis's other solo offerings), even if you do like the "antics" of Jerry Lewis, or in fact, like people who use the word antics. See one of the early black and whites with Dean Martin (I'm fond of The Stooge, but what do I know). Pass on this trash.

If you can stand Jerry Lewis (i.e. you are French) you will probably love this movie. The rest of us will watch a pot boil.
