In this docudrama based on true events, a mid-'80s Michigan housewife finds her life turned upside down when a vacation to Tehran with her Iranian husband turns into virtual imprisonment for her and her young daughter. Betty Mahmoody (Sally Field) is reluctant to visit the wartorn homeland of her doctor husband, Moody (Alfred Molina). But, depressed about the racism of the American medical establishment and pining for contact with his family, Moody convinces her to join him for a two-week jaunt. The Islamic fundamentalism and strange customs of Iran bewilder and frighten Betty and her daughter, Mahtob (Sheila Rosenthal). But nothing prepares her for Moody's announcement that the family will be remaining in Tehran indefinitely. Despite beatings and more pervasive psychological control from her husband and his relatives, Betty makes it to the Swiss embassy (there is no American ambassador at the time). There, she learns that as the wife of an Iranian, she is now automatically considered a citizen and that she has absolutely no parental rights over Mahtob in this country. Betty then endures several years as a virtual prisoner, escaping only with the help of Westernized Iranian friends. Based on the book by the real-life Mahmoody and William Hoffer, Not Without My Daughter was coincidentally released during the long build-up to 1991's Gulf War. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi

Sally Fields did an awesome job! I found myself physically angry at the audacity of her husband. I can't believe this is a true story & find myself so darn lucky to have been born into a family where women are placed upon pedestals & respected in soooo many ways. Definately looking at reading the book now.

I really enjoyed this movie.Shows how these middle east countries treat their women.

Usual stellar performance from Sally Field, and the only reason for the 4 star instead of 5 is my disappointment in Alfred Molina's acting. If I could tell he was lying the whole time, then why wouldn't his own wife pick that up?

If you are especially a female and you have never thought or said "God bless America" in your lifetime, in my opinion it is a must for you to see this movie. Besides, it is very well acted and directed.

This movie was well done. While I respect this culture and there are good and bad people in every culture, this was very scary how this happened and I have to truly admire Betty's courage!

Salley Field is excellent in this, the character is deceived by her own husband and this is based on a true story so these things do happen. If you want to watch a movie where you dare not leave you seat, this is a must see movie!

Alfred Molina and Sally Field are superb in their roles. Excellent attention to details. It is a believable drama from beginning to the end. I call this a “must see” movie.

This movie is about an Iranian doctor who takes his American wife and daughter to Iran for a two-week visit, but then he decides to live in Iran and he forces his family to stay with him. I’ve been in Iran myself and I can say that all the scenes in this movie are extremely exaggerated in a negative manner. This film tries to display Iran as a wild and insecure country where men beat their wives all the time, women have no voice in the family, and there is no safety in the streets of the city. The story happens in the capital of Iran, Tehran, but none of the scenes are actually filmed in Tehran. Although the movie might be based on a true story, it is misguiding to look at this movie as a documentary. The Iranian culture shown in this movie is not the real culture we see in contemporary Iranian families. In my view, this film has distorted the real Persian culture by showing Iranian families as religious fanatics who do not value human rights and equality of men and women.
