Northanger Abbey (1987) Reviews

Northanger Abbey (1987)
Member Rating:
Northanger Abbey was filmed in England and first telecast in the U.S. on December 2, 1987. This 90-minute adaptation of Jane Austen's 1818 novel incorporates the author's usual interconnecting themes of true love and acquisition of wealth, and tosses in a little Gothic mystery for good measure. Katherine Schlesinger stars as the 17-year-old heroine, who has been encouraged to seek out a suitably rich husband while on holiday in Bath. She finds the love of her life, and also more excitement than she ever dreamt possible. Veteran British movie personality Googie Withers is cast as a mercenary matron. Northanger Abbey was PBS' second Masterpiece Theatre presentation of the 1987-88 season. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This one seemed longer than it's hour and a half and really was not Jane's best story and definitely the poorest movie adaption.

Not one of Jane Austen's best works, this movie doesn't do much on the screen. Mysteries are presented and then never satisfactorily resolved and the love story between the heroine and the son of the wealthy owner of Northanger Abbey is hard to believe.

I did not like this video. I must admit that I have not read the book, so I am not sure if it was the production or the book, which I believe was different from Jane Austen's usual style of writing. I have seen the BBC productions of Pride and Prejudice and Emma, and loved the music, as well as the overall productions. I really did not appreciate the music from this version of Northanger Abbey. It was also disappointing when a big deal was made of at least one mystery, but it was not solved. I actually thought I had missed a part of the video and replayed a portion, because the mystery was not answered.

I have read Jane Austin's works several times and watched all of the video's at least twice except Northangr Abby. I find this version lacking in the production and acting of some of the actors. Was not up to the quality of other versions.

I couldn't imagine a worse production of Jane Austen's work. So badly done and so far from Austen's intent, I had to check the label to see if it was based on the same novel. It was a weird waste of time.

was dissapointed in this adaptation-felt it was mis-cast and thoroughly unconvincing.

This film is completely dated, with it's 80s keyboard music throughout and really crappy acting. It's only 90 minutes, which doesn't leave much time for the relationships to develop. I wish I had not wasted those 90 minutes of my life though! Pass this one up!!

If this had been the first Jane Austin I had seen, it would have been my last....
