Norma Rae (1979)
Member Rating:
Norma Rae finds Sally Field cast in the title role, a minimum-wage worker in a cotton mill. The factory has taken too much of a toll on the health of Norma Rae's family for her to ignore her Dickensian working conditions. After hearing a speech by New York union organizer Reuben (Ron Leibman), Norma Rae decides to join the effort to unionize her shop. This causes dissension at home when Norma Rae's husband, Sonny (Beau Bridges), assumes that her activism is a result of a romance between herself and Reuben. Despite the pressure brought to bear by management, Norma Rae successfully orchestrates a shutdown of the mill, resulting in victory for the union and capitulation to its demands. Based on a true story, Norma Rae is the film for which Sally Field won her first Oscar; an additional Oscar went to David Shire and Norman Gimbel for the film's theme song, "It Goes Like It Goes." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Sally Field shines in this under-rated drama about a 1970's cotton mill union movement. The subject matter may sound dry, but Fields and the rest of the cast makes it a fascinating study in character development. The dialogue is excellent, and the cast extras and set feels incredibly realistic. The tension between Fields and the people around her makes for a subtle but cutting drama.

Ugh saw this movie for the first time I never knew that sally fields played a role l like this ... and clearly I feel this was a great performance yet love the movie and it gave me a clear understanding of the 1970's union movement

Excellent movie. Excellent acting by Sally Field. Today it might seem dated in that it's over-the-top with the pro-union anti capitalistic theme. Of course it's worth seeing even if you don't agree with its dated theme.

Seeing it now, Sally Field is like a union Erin Brockovich heroine, except she doesn't get the big monetary payoff in the end. Also, she is in a small town in the 70's when it is not popular to to be unmarried with kids. She shows off a very serious side to her acting and promotes Norma Rae as an empathetic character.

Sally Field certainly deserves winning best actress for this movie - she is completely immersed in her role as Norma Rae.

Sally Field was great in this movie. I can see why she won an Oscar for her role. Thirty years later this film can still hold its own.

I loved this film! I loved Norma Rae's spunk and her unstoppable drive - shows what a real woman can do in this world. The acting was great and the plot was extremely engaging. Definitely worth watching and owning!
