Noises Off (1992)

Michael Frayn's frantic West End and Broadway farce makes a literal transformation to the screen in Peter Bogdanoch's faithful adaptation, which is transplanted from the London suburbs to Des Moines, Iowa to accommodate the (mostly) American cast. Michael Caine stars as director Lloyd Fellowes, assigned to bring the successful British sex farce "Nothing On" to the boards in America. In an intricate technical rehearsal, Lloyd puts his cast through their paces -- Garry Lejuene (John Ritter), an obliging feature actor; Dotty Otley (Carol Burnett), a fading theatrical star; Frederick Dallas (Christopher Reeve), a handsome leading man who demands to know the motivation behind every scene; Brooke Ashton (Nicollette Sheridan), the sexy leading lady; Belinda Blair (Marilu Henner), the seen-it-all second female lead; and Seldson Mawbray (Denholm Elliot), the inebriated character actor. The technical rehearsal goes off without a hitch, but as the play travels the country in pre-Broadway performances, the eccentricities of the cast come to the fore and the performances in Des Moines and Cleveland are complete disasters. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Not sure this one got the publicity it deserved. Great cast, and the situations are really funny. I laughed out loud severasl times.

This is SUCH a funny movie with amazing physical humor, clever lines and a delightful all-star cast. TOTALLY worth renting!!! If you like this, I recommend the movies Oscar and Stepping Out. *Note that this movie is not racy. You see Sheridan in her lingerie, but that's about it.

This film is a treat that brings together Carol Burnett, John Ritter, Nicolette Sheridan, etc. as thespians who are preparing to open a sex farce. The movie chronicals the out of town try-outs to "opening night" on Broadway. With the deaths of Reeves and Ritter, it is bittersweet to be reminded of their fine comedic skills. My only criticism is that the Michael Caine character becomes tiresome. Watch this movie anyway, it is a great discovery!

I looked forward to seeing this because of all the complimentary member reviews. I suppose if you like a movie about a Broadway stage play, it could have been one laugh after another. However it was a complete disappointment to me. The Broadway farce isn't an easy genre to be drawn into. I found almost all the jokes and set-ups to be old and stale. So if you don't laugh within the first 10 minutes, you will probably find the remaining 80 minutes painfully trite.

A farce within a farce about a farce.... A group of bumbling stage actors rehearse a Broadway-bound show, and the audience is treated to one of the most furiously hilarious movies of the 90s. The cast is charming, the script hysterical, and the situations absurd. One warning: this movie is unmistakably based on a play, and those unfamiliar with, or not fond of, the theater will likely be unimpressed.

An excellent farce that loses none of its comedic timing and frantic pace in movie form. It also shows what a great comic actor Christopher Reeves could have been. This is a must see.

What a great line up of comedians. They all hit the mark on cue. Some of the script is so cleaver, it's worth watching more than once to catch it all. Lots of laughs.
