Battle Cry (1955)
Member Rating:
Adapted by Leon Uris from his own novel, the film follows a group of World War II marines, from Basic Training to Battlefield. Major Van Heflin knows that his men are spoiling for a real fight, but must make do with the desultory skirmishes assigned them by the Brass. All this changes with an onslaught of heavy-duty battling in the South Pacific. Aldo Ray plays a tough leatherneck who falls in love with demure Nancy Olson, while James Whitmore, Tab Hunter, Dorothy Malone and Raymond Massey costar. And watch for young Justus McQueen, cast as private L.Q. Jones; McQueen liked his character name so much that he adopted it as his professional cognomen. Composer Max Steiner's musical score earned him an Oscar nomination. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In spite of the movie's name, this wasn't so much a movie about actual combat. It was more about the common folk who serve their country and the personal battles they face living that life.

I wanted to like this movie a lot since Leon Uris is one of my favorite authors but it was undoubtedly one of the finest examples of 1950's bad acting. I can't wait to read the book now just to get the bad memories of this stinker out of my head. I have to believe Leon was "directed" to write the screenplay this way by the producers.

"Battle Cry" is a ridiculous name for this movie which has no battles whatsoever. "Cry Babies" is more apropa as this mess is replete with "marines" crying about "Dear John" letters and most anything else. A soap opera about boys at boot camp missing girls, messing with married women and gernerally overacting about it all. I'd rather go through boot camp myself than go through this movie again.

Battle Cry,has a special meaning to me for 2 reasons.First,I served in the Marine Corps,in the Ist Marine Division;in Vietnam. And more important than that,My father-in-law;now deceased was one of the Marines that Landed on Guadalcanal on August 7,1942.Also,he was relieved by the Matines,in this movie;and he spent sometime in New Zealand.Great movie!!! 5 stars!!

WWII movies made around this time frame are generally very good. This movie is an exception to the rule. Very long, very boring, and the plot is non-existent. The movie just "is" and that is not saying much. Do not waste your time!

Raoul Walsh made some great movies in the 40s & 50s (High Sierra, White Heat, A Lion is in the Streets), but Battle Cry isn't one of them. Worth watching for the solid performances by James Whitmore & especially Dorothy Malone in an all-too-brief role. The only battle scenes in Battle Cry come late in the movie, and look quite amateurish compared to those in most war movies.
