Battle Beyond the Stars (1980) Reviews

Battle Beyond the Stars (1980)
Member Rating:
Produced by Roger Corman and scripted by John Sayles, Battle Beyond the Stars is a cheerfully blatant imitation of The Seven Samurai (or at least the American remake The Magnificent Seven). A peaceloving planet is attacked by malevolent aliens. The powers-that-be hire a group of mercenaries, headed by George Peppard, to protect the planet from harm. Peppard's contingent includes squeaky-clean Richard Thomas Jr. and statuesque Sybil Danning. John Saxon goes through his usual paces as the villain, while the supporting players include such dependables as Sam Jaffe, Jeff Corey, and, from Magnificent Seven itself, Robert Vaughn. Keep an eye out for Julia Duffy as "Mol". A deft blend of standard sci-fi action and knowing "inside" humor, Battle Beyond the Stars was one of Corman's biggest hits of the 1980s-not to mention an endless supply of stock footage for future New World Productions. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

It's not great movie-making, but it's entertaining. It's got to be one of the best things to come from Roger Corman, at the very least. It's 1980 folks; three years after the original Star Wars. Everyone was ripping off Star Wars. For people who pay attention to movie music, this was the first movie score by the great James Horner (of "Titanic" fame). Great music (for which I give this movie 4 stars)... Two years later, he scored "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." Many of the themes from ST2:TWOK sound eerily like "Battle Beyond the Stars" (and I mean almost identical). Watch ST2:TWOK again after this movie (if you dare to rent it) and you'll see what I mean.

This campy sci-fi movie is one of Roger Corman's best productions. It is noteworthy because future Oscar winning director James Cameron was art director on this picture. Recommended for those who like campy sci-fi films.

great movie for what it is. an old 1980 sci-fi! over the top story, over the top characters, over the top! interesting characters, and ship designes. would be really interesting to see this movie re-done with todays tech.

Blatton rip-off of "The Seven Samurai" and "Star Wars". B-movie with near bottom-of-the-barrel special effects, but has its good moments. Robert Vaughn repises his role from "The Magnificent Seven"(American remake of "The Seven Samurai") and George Peppard, from the show The A Team, plays Cowboy!-Stone

I really love 80s sci-fi & horror so this one was a good fit for me. Lots of recognizable faces & the story was good as well.
