A decade of wisecracking sequels have not diminished the power of this striking horror film from the director of Scream. Teenagers in a small town are dropping like flies, apparently in the grip of mass hysteria causing their suicides. A cop's daughter (Heather Langenkamp) traces the cause to child molester Fred Krueger (Robert Englund), who was burned alive by angry parents many years before. Krueger has now come back in the dreams of his killers' children, claiming their lives as his revenge. The teenaged leads are sympathetic and intelligent, unlike the dumb victims presented in most films of the period, and they are ably backed up by veterans like John Saxon and Ronee Blakley. Director Wes Craven creates moments of real dread by examining the line between nightmares and reality, as well as the "sins of the parents" theme, and although the film is quite gory, it never resorts to cheap bloodletting for its effect. A unique and disturbing experience, this film is highly recommended for horror buffs. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

I know, I know... it's perceived as being right up there with Halloween 57, Friday the 13th 72, and Jason vs. Pumpkinhead 12... but just like Halloween is a great movie and a classic in it's own right, this, the original Nightmare on Elm Street is an amazingly good horror film. If you're a horror buff and you've never seen it, you're missing out. If you're looking for a movie to scare the sh*t out of you next halloween, try this one on for size. This is truly one of my favorite horror movies of all time.

Great Movie, I ended up buying the all of the elm street movies. Robert Englund is the best Freddy. The remake sucks!!

Classic horror. You owe it to yourself (provided that you're a fan of the genre) to see this movie. Of course it's cheesy in parts, but as a whole it's terrifying and awesome. Watch it.

Saw this for the first time in the early 90's when I was still in middle school. Scared me to the point of not wanting to sleep in my room because I was afraid of shadows and of what lurked in my closet, lol. Still to this day, the movies have a certain element of creepiness that does not exist in any modern day horror flicks. I give this movie 5 stars for the dark humor, creepiness, and terrifying visuals used to create this masterpiece. The sequels were awesome as well.
