The Night of the Shooting Stars (1982)
Member Rating:
In Tuscan lore, the evening of August 10th is la notte di san lorenzo (the night of the shooting stars). Each of these stars is believed to grant one wish. In this celebrated film by Italy's Taviani brothers, a woman asks for the words to tell her son about that same night during the last days of World War II. The Nazis occupied Italy and the fascists had mined her small Tuscan village of San Martino. Skeptical of the fascists' promise that all peasants will be safe in San Martino's cathedral, a group of villagers opt to leave and search for the Italian partisans and advancing American forces. Among those to depart is the woman, then only six years old. La Notte di San Lorenzo is the story of the villagers' remarkable exodus, the fate of those left behind, and the partisan struggle against fascism -- lyrically intertwined with their thoughts, loves, fears, and memories, as well as the fantasies of a young girl experiencing the tragedy she perceives to be her greatest adventure. ~ Aubry Anne D'Arminio, Rovi

Filming and acting are superb and the story accentuates the senselessness of war. To anyone who understands Italian and German or who does not mind subtitles (these are better than some) I would heartily recommend this movie.

Wow, I saw the 4 star rating and put this in my queue hoping to find a shining "star" in this Italian import from 1982. I am a lover of many types of films with independent and foreign films topping the list. It's a big world out there and there are tons of films helmed by some ferociously talented foreign directors and writers that are in desperate need of discovery by American audiences. But, folks this ain't one of em... I was not prepared for how bad this film was! The acting was amateurish, the story line was disjointed with little or no continuity. The dialogue was bad and is compounded by the fact that you are reading it - somehow seeing it in print made it worse. I stuck this movie out - thinking it had to get better - I was wrong! I want my 107 minutes back! You want to see a great Italian film - pick up "Cinema Paradiso" , "My Life As A Dog", "Once Upon A Time In the West" or even "My name is Nobody". Anything - as long as it's not this drivel!

I can't say it any better than the other reviewer. I had great expectations but squirmed through the whole movie. A nice concept, but poorly executed.

I saw this as part of a college international film festival. It sucked for me. I tried to stick out and I did, but it was so bad. Others gave some insight that I was grateful for, like the priest wanting to Believe in the government who inevitably failed the people and his heart so broken. But I was bored, couldn't See as much as I would've liked. Watch at your own peril. I was just bored and I love foreign films. It is through the perspective of a child but in the end...oh well:(
