Behind the black cowl, Gotham City superhero Batman is really millionaire philanthropist Bruce Wayne (Michael Keaton), who turned to crimefighting after his parents were brutally murdered before his eyes. The only person to share Wayne's secret is faithful butler Alfred (Michael Gough). The principal villain in Batman is The Joker (Jack Nicholson) who'd been mob torpedo Jack Napier before he was horribly disfigured in a vat of acid. The Joker's plan to destroy Batman and gain control of Gotham City is manifold. First he distributes a line of booby-trapped cosmetics, then he goes on a destruction spree in the Gotham Art Museum while the music of Prince blasts away in the background, and finally he orchestrates an all-out campaign to win the hearts and minds of the Gothamites, hoping to turn them against the Cowled One. Meanwhile, reporter Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger) becomes the love of Batman's life-which of course plays right into the Joker's hands. Photographed by Roger Pratt, designed by Anton Furst, and scored by Tim Burton's favorite composer Danny Elfman, Batman was a monstrous box-office hit, making $100 million in the first ten days of release--$82,800,000 in North America alone. Incidentally, Billy Dee Williams' comparatively small role as DA Harvey Dent was originally designed to set up the sequel, wherein Dent was to convert into master criminal Two-Face; but by the time the producers got around to that character in 1995's Batman Forever, Two-Face was played by Tommy Lee Jones. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I really enjoyed it in 1989, but it did not stand the test of time. I'm 20 years older and a little more movie-savvy. Michael Keaton's performance wasn't bad, but forgettable. Vicki Vale was probably miscast. Jack Nicholson was flawless as usual. This movie's worth the rental, but just barely.

This movie is by far the best of all the Batman's ever made including Dark Knight is 100% Garbage! Michael Keaton as Batman, Jack Nicholson as the Joker Doesn't get any better than this... I mean seriously who else can play a better role than them? Nobody!

This movie is dark! You'll feel like you are going blind. Your rear end will hurt because you are bored with what is going on on the screen. I was squirming the whole time trying to wait until the movie ended. I was exhausted and grateful the movie was over. To be frank, that is all I remembered about this film. You really shouldn't bother because nothing about the film is memorable except you wasted time.

pretty good. would have given it 5 stars in '89, it just aged a bit. jack nicholson's portrayal of the joker wasnt overly joker-ish, but it was still pretty good. i hate almost every tim burton movie.. but this movie is GREAT. oh yeah, this is a good choice if your kids are a bit too young for nolan's movies, but prefer a darker version of batman.

The movie was a masterpiece when it was released back in 1989. You can tell it took a lot more from the Batman graphic novels that were released in the 80's. So what's wrong with the movie? First of all Michael Keaton is about as intimidating as a puppy Maltese. Seriously, who in their right mind thought that Keaton looked the part?? My next problem is that Commissioner Gordon has about half a page worth of dialogue! Moving forward, one of the principals of what makes Batman "Batman" is that he will kill under no circumstance. In the movie there is a scene where he literally blows about 10-15 bad guys to pieces inside of what looks like a warehouse. Also at the end of the film our hero intentionally throws another bad guy down about 100 stories of a building. What where they thinking? This is the stuff Batman was built on, the reason his character is who he is! Overall, this is an important and GOOD film in the Batman series, however, it is not the best. 7/10

Did I really like this movie as a teenager? Tim Burton did great with the set and cinematography as always. But the acting... OH THE ACTING!!! Jack Nicholson was fantastic, but I was shocked to see Michael Keaton so unconvincing and wooden. Yeah, Batman's supposed to be aloof and diffident, but this was robotic. Somebody please bury every film with Kim Basinger in a vault somewhere for future generations to discover and bemoan. "I like bats."... quite possibly the lowest point in motion picture.

If superman is aspoof of german ww2 propaganda or just good health is batman the down and dirty leading man jew superhero we all have been waiting for? Very dark movie though for a major release of the magic of viacom industries in the early 90's jumpsatring e entertainment television. Is this disturbing? If so dont check out the wonder boys with Tobey mcguire another superhero actor...you might put two and two togetha Jack!
