All of the gags in this film are totally ridiculous and over-the-top. The Marx Brothers are the funniest people who ever lived. Groucho comes up with the most hilarious and unpredictable things to say, as does Chico. Harpo is also hysterical in his pantomime act. Although most people prefer "Duck Soup" to this film, "A Night at the Opera" is the funniest in my opinion. In this film the laughs built more and more until the climactic ending, providing to be the funniest in film history. Perhaps the funniest thing in this film is watching and listening to Groucho insult people in high-society positions. I won't give away any of the film's humor, but see it for sure. Way better than any of the crude and annoying humor found in today's comedies. See it and truly laugh for the first time.

The comedy back in the 30's was definitely different than now. The extras on the DVD were the best part since it explained a lot about the movie and made it better. Read More The Marx Brothers' earliest picture for Paramount are easily their best, but at the time they were all flops. So when the Marx Brothers signed with MGM, there movies became much more 'conventional.' NIGHT AT THE OPERA is the first one they made for MGM and probably the best. The picture's firmly rooted in a serious dramatic narrative that isn't too shabby, and the Marx Brothers are as sharp as ever, even if the surreal anarchy surrounding their humor is toned down a bit. Groucho's still a master of one-liners, Chico skewers the English language like no one can, and Harpo is still a master of pantomime. (Harpo and Chico also give their finest musical performances in this picture.) I prefer the older Marx Brothers movies, but if you're new to their humor, this may be the best place to start.
