Night Shift (1982)
Member Rating:
Straight-laced Henry Winkler takes a night-shift job as a morgue attendant. Winkler falls under the spell of wheeler-dealer coworker Michael Keaton, whose catchphrase "Is this a great country or what?" is the clarion call for his many get-rich-quick schemes. His latest plan is to turn the morgue into a nocturnal brothel, for the benefit of anything-goes hooker Shelley Long-and incidentally, to line their own pockets. Director Ron Howard and his frequent scripters Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel turn the potentially lurid story material of Night Shift into an endearing comedy, with winning performances from its three often miscast stars. Keep an eye out during one of the party sequences for Kevin Costner as a carousing college boy. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I saw this movie at the theater when it first came out and I thought it was one of the best comedies I'd ever seen. However, in viewing it for the first time in 25 years on DVD this movie hasn't aged that well. The movie does have a very good cast even though Shelley Long, Michael Keaton and Henry Winkler have just about disappeared off the map in recent years. This is one of Ron Howard's best early films. I do recommend it, especially to those who have never seen it.

I watched this movie again last night. It was funny - not as funny as when I watched it when it was first on video tape - but funny just the same. Is the change because I am older or the jokes were better timed to the time when the Movie was relaeased. A very high energy young Michael Keaton adds a lot of spice to this movie! Henry Winkler and Shelly Long are good in their parts.

Truly a great cast, exciting humor, funny all the way through. Enough love and romances to please everyone.

I thought it was pretty dumb. I was very disappointed because Ron Howard usually puts out much better movies. With Ron Howard producing it and the star studded cast I thought it couldn't fail. But it did. I would not recommend it.

This movie was funny and kept our interest until it was over, especially Shelley Long's really appealing acting skills reminiscent of Cheers.

Classic Movie! Michael Keaton's breakthrough, and also a very tiny first part for a Mr. Kevin Costner (watch the morgue party scene, he's in the background while Keaton is balancing the bottle on his forehead). Hysterical, and triumphant debut for Ron Howard to start his career. "Feed mayonnaise to the tuna fish, call Starkist"!

More Ron Howard mediocrity . . . but, of course, his brother Clint got a part . . . even made the opening credits.

I wish I had seen this back in 1982, however, it is still funny today in 2011, I can't believe I miss this little gem, as I am a big fan of Winkler, Keaton & Long.
