Multimedia horror maven Clive Barker followed the success of his feature directorial debut, Hellraiser, with this equally surreal effort, based on his novella Cabal. The story involves the plight of Aaron Boone (Craig Sheffer), a young man tormented by visions of monstrous, graveyard-dwelling creatures. Seeking the aid of his clinically cold therapist Dr. Decker (played by Canadian horror auteur David Cronenberg) in deciphering his nightmares, Boone becomes convinced that his frequent blackouts are linked to a recent spate of mutilation murders in the area. His frantic search for the truth leads him to the subterranean city of Midian, the dwelling place of a mythical race of undead nocturnal monsters known as the "Nightbreed." But it is only after he is cornered and shot dead by police that Boone's real journey begins -- he finds himself resurrected as one of the Breed. Though Barker's unique and graphic vision is somewhat blunted by choppy editing (thanks to relentless tampering from the studio), this is nevertheless a fine sophomore project from a talented storyteller; the central conceit of presenting the monsters as the "good guys" -- at least compared to the gun-and-bible-toting lunatics who hunt them -- is handled with verve and originality. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

In my opinion this was the last good horror movie ever made. This was during the era where horror movies weren't slasher or thriller movies, but actually had monsters and evil in them. What a selection of creatures Mr. Barker has assembled too all with distinct personalities. The movie is only a small portion of the book Cabal, but it tells a story from start to finish. If horror films were still made like this one I doubt the majority wouldn't be straight to video releases.

This is a great flick. Good action, and pretty interesting. It's like a fantasy/horror movie. One moment you have a weirdly masked psycho murdering people, and then you have these Nightbreed folks. Gotta love the Berserkers : )

If you've ever come in contact with anything Clive Barker (books, movies, games) and you haven't seen this, watch it today. It is one of his better written works, and transfers well to the screen. Fully enjoyable to the end.

Adapted from Barker's (Dir. of Hellraiser/Lord of Illusions and a great writer) novel, Cabal. Original idea but it lacks character development and it has choppy editing. Otherwise, good speical effects and great make up. David Chonenberg (Dir. of The Fly/Scanners/A History of Voilince) has a great part as a psychotic psychiatrist. The Apocolypse is coming.

Nightbreed is a classic for fans of the occult/horror genre. One of Clive Barker's better films by far. Highly recommended to fans of Hellraiser, Lord of Illusions, Underworld and the like!!!

This wasn't the worst movie ever, but it just wasn't scary at all. I don't have a big beef with the acting, except for a couple of the monsters who sucked. The plot was pretty lame, but you do get to see breasts in the movie, and that's basically the only consolation prize for watching it.

The acting was horrible. Wasn't sure what the doctors deal was. It was very strange. but ok.

I liked the make-up effects. The acting was lame. A lot of emptiness in the script. The actors seemed clueless dumb or over exaggerated. The plot was nonexistent. It is a good teen movie (but oviously rated R for a reason) with a lot of special make up FX.

Do not under any circumstances believe the other reviews of this movie. There is no plot, the special effects are junior high science fair at best, and my mom did better costumes for me on halloween.
