Edith Piaf: A Passionate Life (2004)
Member Rating:
Widely regarded as one of the most popular female singers of all time, Edith Piaf's unique voice and talent earned her an incredible career and the nickname "Little Sparrow." Filmed four years after her death, this French documentary contains a plethora of rare archival footage, film clips of Piaf in some of her greatest performances, and several historic interviews. Among the songs included are "La Vie en Rose," "A Quoi Ça Sert l'Amour," "Milord," and "Mon Dieu." Edith Piaf: A Passionate Life also provides a retrospective of the singer's life and career, from her birth in 1915 to her death in 1963, and all of the tragedies and highly publicized romances in between. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

There are about 15 minutes of film clips of Piaf here that make the hour-long disc worth watching. Other than that it's very dated and insubstantial, with a wooden voice-over translation.

Whatever happened to subtitles? The dubbing/voice-over ruined this otherwise good documentary. I gave it two stars just because they did not try to translate the songs as well...

I had purchased this DVD a long time after Marion had won the best actress award for her performance in it. I purchased it by accident and did not view it for a long time after that. I was not disappointed!! Wonderful performance, truly poignant love story, although not carried through enough, and very informative about the edges of Edith's life. Must See DVD. I am emcouraged by this film to delve more into the life of Edith Piat's live because of this film. I want to know more about why the "Little Sparrow" sang.

Giving this 2 stars only because there is a small bit of great footage of Edith Piaf that I hadn't seen before. I waited over a year for this and I could have done a better job of narrating her life in my sleep. I can't believe they didn't translate all the newspaper articles or explain what was going on, they would just flash them and I had to keep stopping the dvd to translate to my husband what the headlines were saying. Very poorly done and written unfortunately. Edith Piaf deserves way better than this!

The only thing that redeems this documentary are the actual clips showing Piaf in performances. The interviews are shallow. The narration lame and without any real substance.
