Richard Linklater directs the romantic drama Before Sunset, a sequel to Before Sunrise (1995). Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) were strangers who spent a loquacious night together in Vienna. Nine years later, Jesse has written a book about the encounter. During his accelerated European book tour, he reunites with Celine in Paris. Before Jesse's flight home, he joins Celine for a picturesque walk around Paris peppered with intimate conversation: at first, about the minutiae of their day-to-day lives and their relationships, and then about their lingering feelings for one another. Before Sunset was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi
The whole movie seems to take place in real time. I also loved the changes in the characters attitudes and personalities. It made the movie seem real. Same great performances, dialogue and directing from the first one. I can only hope for a third and final installment.
Along with the first movie, "Before Sunset", probably one of the best love stories I've seen. For those of you who don't understand the ending, watch it again and listen to his last 2 words. They say it all. And, for those of you wondering, a 3rd movie is in the works and I can't wait to see how this wonderful relationship has progressed. Get them both and watch them back to back. Excellent character study.
This movie is better than the stars-ratings would indicate, maybe better than the original. It captures the awkwardness of a years later reunion in the 1st hour. But it falters notably as we see Celine having become somewhat coarser (in speech and intimate matters) though Jesse has become more restrained, mature, and secure. OK, character development. But the big failing is the non-ending sudden ending with questions hanging. Yes, that can be artsy, but it's the economy version of that. Better for an ambiguous ending would be another stage-setter for a possible rendezvous of some kind, as in the first. In fact, this low-budget cult hit really could be remade or updated every 5 to 10 years, a little like "Same Time Next Year" did in one film. These two know they belong together, but how ...?
This is possibly the worst movie I have ever viewed. I was saddened to learn that this was a sequel, couldn't the writer/producer or someone have realized that after the first load of trash the rational thing was to give up and cut their losses.
