Independent filmmaker Chris Kentis directs the dramatic thriller Open Water, based on a true story. Susan (Blanchard Ryan) and Daniel (Daniel Travis) are a busy married couple on an island vacation. They board a vessel called the Reef Explorer with a group of other scuba divers, traveling 15 miles out to sea. Since they are certified to dive in open waters, the couple breaks off from the group to go exploring. The Reef Explorer accidentally leaves without a proper head count, leaving them stranded in shark-infested waters. Kentis and producer wife Laura Lau did all the filming themselves in the actual ocean without extraneous special effects, while the actors wore special steel-mesh under their wetsuits in the scenes where actual sharks were involved. Open Water was shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004 as part of the American Spectrum competition. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

We rented this movie on the advice of so many friends. It was slow, very poorly done, but not one person that I have ever spoken to that has seen this movie can say that it didn't emotionally scar them in some way! I think it could have been done better, but know that the story was a true story. It really left you with the worst feeling in the back of your mind that "it could happen to anyone". We have been out on those boats in Cancun and such for dives and they really do no sort of head count or anything. The time is up and if the person seated next to you doesn't notice you are missing on the drive back, you are on your own! :) Watch it if you have nothing else to watch and be sure you have the time to devote to watching it. It really is painful if you try to do anything else during the movie.

I think although it was slow you felt for the characters, this can happen in real life! Anyways I think it was well worth watching

I think that knowing what the movie is about from the beginning makes it easier to watch. It does require patience but it doesn't let you down. It's something that could happen and you're wanting to see what happens next. I liked it enough to see the second one.

i saw this at the theatres years ago and havn't watched it since but i remember thinking it was actually pretty good for such a low budget film but its been years since ive seen the movie and i know a lot of people dont really care for the movie seeing as how cheape the film looks but i gave it a rewatch and its much better than often given credit for, yes you can tell its low budget but its still a scary film never the less.

I am a diver and this movie was so-so. There were good parts (up to the point they were stranded in the water. After that, it was pure speculation since no one knows what happened. If the film makers were divers, they would not have the couple act as if they had no training. Since I could not relate to the stupidity, I did not enjoy it.

perhaps you have to be a scuba diver to give this more than 3 stars- it helps to relate. Movie was done well; seems this is how it would actually go down. I think it's quite a good movie, and I've seen it several times, but it's certainly not for everyone. If you dive regularly and/or have been resort diving while on vacation, as is depicted going horribly wrong in the movie, it'll certainly resonate with you. Worth a watch.

Screamed to my short list of worst movies ever. Open Water is slow, lacks substance and the poor cinematography dominates throughout the film - i'll watch almost anything, but I wanted my time back from this waste.

Absolutely, without a doubt, the worst movie I have ever seen! No dive service would be that incompetent. A total waste of time watching this movie.
