In the wake of his success on the hit NBC sitcom Scrubs, actor Zach Braff made his debut behind the camera writing, directing, and starring in this bittersweet romantic comedy. Braff plays Andrew Largeman, a young man who has just received word of his mother's passing. With this news, Andrew returns to the town in which he grew up, where he is greeted by his father, Gideon (Ian Holm), a psychiatrist. In addition to mourning the loss of his mother, Andrew is also attempting to adjust to life without the emotionally numbing antidepressants that he has recently opted to discontinue using. Gradually, with the absence of the pills, his reconnection with his past, and the introduction of Sam (Natalie Portman), a woman who would seem to have little in common with him, into his life, Andrew is able to see the potential for some positive changes. Also starring Jean Smart and Peter Sarsgaard, Garden State was once titled Large's Ark and premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

I think this movie really benefits from Zach having so much creative control. I could really see this was a labor of love for him, and I didn't even know he wrote and directed it until after I saw the film. This was one of my favorite performances by Natalie, she really shines in this movie. I know I've watched a great movie when I'm still thinking about it well after the credits have rolled. I watched this movie three days ago and I'm motivated enough to write this review.

This movie was amazing. An amazingly written screenplay by Braff. A combination of every emotion imaginable. Not a cheezy chick flick. A romance story. But, in my opinion, a great movie. Watch it. Plus its got a great soundtrack.

Didn't even finish the movie - it started so slooooow and seemed like it would be one of those stupid romance movies. Not worth my time.

We kept hoping for Natalie Portman to rescue this depressing film, but gave up and turned it off! Maybe slacker, twenty-somethings can see something in this movie, but life is way too short to watch this when there are so many other much better films.

I think this was perhaps Zach Braff's first film? Well, I really enjoyed it the first few times i saw it, but then i started noticing at some points in the movie, things were overly awkward. I understand that there are scenes with old friends that are supposed to be wierd, but the script at some points was boring. There were several scenes that I loved, but there were also some that made me want fast forward because of the dullness.

Nothing redeeming in this movie. Portrait created by main character was unreal. Suggest you pass it up.
