The Naked Prey (1966) Reviews

The Naked Prey (1966)
Member Rating:
In the bush country of South Africa in the late 19th century, chauvinistic hunter Gert vanDen Bergh calculatedly offends a local tribal chief. Given several opportunities, he refuses to apologize. As consequence, vanDen Bergh and the rest of his hunting party are captured by the tribesmen and grotesquely tortured to death. The only white man spared is safari-guide Cornel Wilde, whom the natives respect and vice versa. The tribesmen offer Wilde a chance to survive; stripping him naked and giving him a knife to defend himself, they set Wilde free in the jungle, in preparation of hunting him down like a lion. Given a head start equal to the distance one of the tribesman can fire an arrow, Wilde is pursued by the tribe's six most accomplished warriors. The rest of this thrill-a-minute film follows Wilde into the underbrush in his desperate, resourceful flight for life. Cornel Wilde's The Naked Prey was filmed entirely on location under circumstances nearly as dangerous as the plight of its protagonist. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

excellent movie, almost no dialoque except for the beginning of the movie, simple plot , man ticks off natives and gets chased across africa by them, great cinematography(i believe it was all shot in africa) and very taught and suspenseful, highly recommended................

Great movie. It doesn't have the constant adrenaline rush that Apocalypto has, but "The Naked" prey has enough suspense to keep you going. The fact that the subtitles of the African language aren't included gives us, the viewers, the same "fish out of water" experience that the main character is experiencing--not knowing what to do next or even how. I was disturbed by the elephant killing scene (and who, with a conscience, wouldn't?), but it adds to the themes of the movie (the carnality of the hunt, the seemingly "mighty" brought down, etc.). Excellent film for its time.

This one must have been a real event to view in a movie palace, way back when we were a moral society. Great story , great widescreen print, excellent acting.

Interesting storyline and movie if you ignore all the obvious errors: cheetahs don't roar, African snakes have no rattles, and the lead character runs through the bush for days with nary a scratch from the ever-present, thorn-covered acacia trees.

Kind of a man's, man movie. Makes you think, "What would I do?" , type of movie. I REALLY liked it.

This is the best movie ever made. Cornel Wilde is tougher than any modern day action hero. He is THE MAN!!

While the movie has an interesting premise, it does get rather weary after the first hour of the man on man hunt. However, the concept is intriguing. Worth watching but make sure to have caffeine on hand.
