The Mystery of Picasso (1956) Reviews

The Mystery of Picasso (1956)

Released shortly after Luciano Emmer's documentary Picasso, H. G. Clouzot's Le Mystère Picasso was an unmitigated commercial disaster - all the more tragic when one considers the groundbreaking nature of its content. Like Emmer before him, Clouzot offers rare and precious glimpses of Pablo Picasso at work. The film watches Picasso draw or paint 15 different works, often via tightly-compressed, time-lapse cinematography. All of the featured masterpieces were intentionally destroyed following production, meaning that they exist only in the cinematic realm. With this documentary, Clouzot comes as close as humanly possible to defining the genius of Picasso within the parameters of the camera lens. Oddly, Le Mystère Picasso does not appear on many of the "official" lists of Clouzot's films, even though it won a Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Interesting presentation from a very artistic group - for English speakers I highly recommend the narrations provided by the 2 commentators for some add'l insight.

Awesome. To watch a creative genius at work without bothersome commentary, genius filming. The 8 minute sequence when Picasso creates, creates again, and then overdraws two genius drawings to create a third work of art is amazing to watch. Watch a second time with the commentary. Recommend your library buy it for their art collection.

I simply adore this movie! I watched it three times when I rented it a while ago. The commentaries are very interesting and informative. This is definitely one of the best art films I have ever seen. And Henri-Georges Clouzot added some suspense just for the sake of the audience :) His movie Wages of Fear is also recommended.
