Murphy's War (1971)

Peter Yates directed this quirky World War II war drama starring Peter O'Toole as Murphy, an Irishman who survives the torpedoing of a merchantman ship off the jungle coast of Venezuela by a German U-boat. Murphy is rescued by French oil engineer, Louis Brezon (Philippe Noiret), who reluctantly takes Murphy to a nearby Quaker mission hospital. Nursed back to health by a missionary nurse (Sian Phillips), Murphy himself nurses a grudge against the German U-boat that blew up the British merchant ship. Meanwhile, a pilot is brought to the mission whose plane had been shot down by the Germans. He begs Murphy to find his airplane to keep it out of enemy hands. But after the pilot dies, Murphy has another idea -- to find the plane, locate the hated U-boat, and blow it to smithereens. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

A likable little gem, with O'Toole's "Murphy" as an avenging rogue with an Ahab complex worth rooting for. It takes it's time, as few movies made today are. A unique take on WWll.

A really interesting movie. One of O'Toole's lesser known films no doubt. Strange, but makes you laugh at times. The ending is unexpected.

Great "little movie" from the early 70's. I remember seeing this with my Dad at the movies. Well acted and shot in gorgeous Venezuela. This one aged very well like a good wine. I loved it back then and I loved seeing it again.

Okay, so it wasn't perfect. Still, it was great to watch an old movie without pro-socialist statements in it. Really, it was very enjoyable.

Peter O'Toole is a splendid actor---he really knows how to get your attention. This movie, at times, was utterly ridiculous but hilarious at times. A one-man war against a vicious and brutal submarine's commander and his crew for the murder of the men on his ship, in which he was the sole survivior. I recommend this to all who like to see Peter O'Toole in one of his best performances and who enjoy watching a very cunning person getting even. GREAT, GREAT, ABSOLUTELY GREAT PERFOMANCES BY ALL.

Murphy's War is based on a novel by the same name written by Gary Paulsen. This film is beautifully shot in widescreen in Venezuela. There are no special features on the DVD. It is simply the story of an Irish seaman, Peter O'Toole, who is obsessed with destroying a German submarine. This warship sunk his boat and gunned down all of his mates. After escaping the attack he is rescued by a Frenchman and taken to a missionary where he is brought back to health by the island's doctor, the beautiful Sian Phillips, who happened to be married to Peter O'Toole at the time this picture was made. One of the more interesting scenes was O'Toole teaching himself to fly so that he could bomb the u-boat with Molotov cocktails. His revenge boarders on the fanatical. Think Moby Dick. A very good film. I never really thought about how the war was fought in South America and the Caribbean until seeing this movie.

An interesting movie with a twist at the end..sreaming O'Toole in the early days..really raucous voice makes everyone around him have to holler louder to be heard..Sian Phillips was excellent as well as the murderous german u-boat captain..a fitting end for their despicable behaviour..all in all I enjoyed it..3 stars!!
