Actor Kenneth Branagh made his directorial debut with a rousing screen adaptation of William Shakespeare's Henry V. Four years later, he returns to the bard's work with this lively version of one of Shakespeare's best comedies. Don Pedro (Denzel Washington), the Prince of Aragon, returns victorious from battle to the praises of the Governor of Messina, Leonato (Richard Briers). One of Don Pedro's bravest men, Claudio (Robert Sean Leonard), falls in love with Hero (Kate Beckinsale), Leonato's daughter, and they plan to marry. However, Don Pedro's devious half-brother Don John (Keanu Reeves) opposes the match, and he devises a plan to turn Hero against Claudio. Meanwhile, Benedict (Branagh), Don Pedro's second-in-command, detests Leonato's niece Beatrice (Emma Thompson), but Don Pedro cleverly brings them together by making each think that the other is secretly in love with them. Much Ado About Nothing also features Michael Keaton in a showy turn as Dogberry. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The Kenneth Branagh adaptions of Shakespeare are well worth watching. Very true to the original in spirit, yet with casts and settings that add to the enjoyment.

Very entertaining if you enjoy a good Shakespear comedy. The Shakespearean language is a little difficult to follow, but if you just go with the flow, it's very funny. Lots of stars in this movie.

Great movie, lively cast, gorgeous women. As usual, Keanu was dreadful, pixel him out and this is a highly recommended movie.

Good stuff. It is what it is, well done and nicely photographed and scored. Keanu is a bit under-utilized probably, as mentioned by another reviewer. All's well that ends well with the Bard.

This movie was ok. I just could not get into it. Maybe an updated version in todays English would have been more enjoyable.

The first thing that strikes me is that this film was a victim of multicultural casting gone amok (isn't that just PC for multiracial casting?) I don't mind a non-euro playing a role, or the entire cast being Chinese. I have a problem when casting choices make no sense. It's not Denzel Washington's reliably wooden acting that stands out, it's that he's playing the equally wooden Keanu Reeves' brother. We're not supposed to notice but it's jarring to have an African as brother of a Polynesian Caucasian. If one family was all played by Africans that would have been fine but it would not have been consistent to have three children played by queen Latifa, Jackie Chan, and Colin Farrell. Although this type of casting is sometimes used on stage (with varying success) it doesn't work on film. Film is a different medium and despite having "Shakespeare's" name attached this is not a play on a stage.
