Concert for George (2003) Reviews

Concert for George (2003)
Member Rating:
Both as a member of the Beatles and as a solo artist, George Harrison was one of the best loved and most influential musicians of his generation, and when he died November 29, 2001, after a long battle with cancer, it was a tremendous blow to the many great artists who were his friends and collaborators. A year to the day after his passing, a handful of pop music royalty who had known and worked with Harrison staged a special concert at London's Royal Albert Hall to play his music and honor his art and memory. Concert for George is a documentary which presents highlights from the Harrison memorial concert, featuring performances by Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Tom Petty and the Heartberakers, Jeff Lynne, Billy Preston, Jools Holland, Sam Brown, and Joe Brown. A portion of the profits from the film's release will be donated to The Material World Foundation, a charitable organization founded by Harrison. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Too bad George Harrison wasn't alive to see this. Clapton stated that George probably wouldn't have wanted such a tribute, but considering the good music and spirits, he would have been touched by this event. Great music although Petty's numbers were less memorable. I am not a fan of Monty Python but their Lumberjack bit was funny. The Indian music was lively but it isn't my cup of tea although their song with Jeff Lynne was good.

Unbelievably good concert from start to finish. I was glued to my chair the entire 286 minutes and was hoarse from singing along. Anyone that is a real George Harrison fan will appreciate the opening dedication to traditional Indian music and Ravi Shankar's daughter is splendid on the sitar. As the rock and roll took over after intermission, I was blown away by the additions to "the band" that would accompany the next succesive guest. Oh and Tom Hanks can sing too (he's a Monty Mounty). Tom Scott on sax, Ray Cooper on percussion, Paul McCartney on ukelele, Billy Preston on keyboards and George's son Dhani in the middle of it all, looking eerily like his Dad, quietly strumming his guitar amongst some of the greatest musicians of our time. Highly, highly recommended! Shorter "theatrical" version also available but I enjoyed every minute of the uncut version.

This was a great tribute to George and his music. All of the musicians did a fantastic job in singing his songs. It was great to see Paul and Ringo along with George's son, Dhani.

a must see for Harrison fans. Unlike another reviewer, I thought Tom Petty's "I need you" was the best performance on the album. get the uncut version and you can go right to the "George's Band" section if you want to see the best part, not that some won't enjoy Ravi Shankar's composition in tribute to George. Billy Preston was unforgettable among all the all stars. Studio quality accoustics from a live performance is tough to achieve but Jeff Lynne pulled it off. Eric Clapton in the lead on "My Guitar Gently Weeps" may have been the highpoint. So put the DVD in and try out that new surround sound system you just got for Christmas. You'll invite some friends over and play it again!

The Pythons, Ravi Shankar and his amazing daughter Anushka, Clapton, Preston, Ringo, Jeff Lynne, Petty, Paul, Dhani Harrison, and so much more-- an amazing, thoughtful, and funny tribute to someone of whom I knew so little.

This is an excellent tribute concert with all of George's closest friends in attendance. The music is superb! Even the Indian music section at the very beginning is very good. Well worth purchasing.

It was a wonderful all star tribute to the quiet beatle. George's son Dhani is a splitting image of George and he is treated as an equal on stage by the old pros! Truly is nice to see Ringo in the background. It would have been nice for Paul McCartney to be there showing respect. Hey, wouldn't it be great to get Sean Lennon, Julian Lennon, Dhani Harrison& Pauls boy together for a group jam and recording session. Even though Pauls son is in his mid 20's and out of sight from the public, you would think he must have Pauls voice and musical talent!! (Forget Ringos kids )Use gods gift to bring us all a new generation of Beatles Magic!!.

EXCELLENT perfomances from a legendary cast! If you are a beatles, Harrison, Clapton, McCartney, Jeff Lynn, Ringo, Tom Petty, or Monty Python fan you MUST see this concert! The other supporting band members are truly a who's who of rock history. Great extras and sound quality too!

The musicianship and sound were supurb. Great quality video. Sometimes there were 4 drummers and at least 6 guitars playing at once. We watched it over and over and give it the highest rating. The interviews also gave some insight to the personality of George H.

THE ONLY REASON I DIDNT GIVE THIS 5 STARS WAS THAT I MADE A MISTAKE AND WATCHED THIS FROM THE VERY BEGINING. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND SKIP THE FIRST 45 MIN, ITS NOTHING BUT INDIAN MUSIC AND AFTER ABOUT 5 MIN IT WILL WHIP YOU. BUT THE REST OF THE SHOW IS AWESOME
