Mr. and Mrs. Bridge (played by real-life "Mr. and Mrs." Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward) are well-to-do residents of Kansas City in the 1940s. So far as the Bridges are concerned, however, it's the 1920s, with Mr. Bridge treating his wife like property, regarding his grown children as if they're still adolescents, and habitually voting against that upstart Roosevelt. Though the underlying painfulness of such an archaic arrangement is never ignored, Mr. Bridges' obstinancy is for the most part amusing. The scene that seemed to please the audience most was the one in which Mr. Bridge orders Mrs. Bridge not to leave their table at their country club despite tornado warnings (they sit quietly in the deserted dining room while the building shakes and shudders). As for Mrs. Bridge, her "life" is totally defined by those around her--which in any other film would be a tragedy, but which here seems a logical extension of all that's gone before. This film tells the story of a conservative, upper middle class family living through the changes of the WW2 era. The portrayal of 1940s America is enjoyable, and the acting is fine, especially Joanne Woodward as a housewife condemned to pointless leisure.

While it may raise some ire in the women to see the manner in which we were regarded not all that long ago...the portrayal of different mores and values is very interesting and there are a few stellar scenes as to be expected by these wonderful actors--altogether a film worth seeing for good performance and interest as to history, sets--I think compared to all the mindless nudity -violence-depravity of so much these days this is a real entertainer!

Don't we wish that Paul were alive. He and Joanne always gave much enertainment. I couldn't even break for dinner and asked to have it brought to me and it got cold. DON'T MISS THIS ONE.

This was okay but not great. Nice to see (real life husband & wife) Paul & Joanne perform together, however though the costumes and sets were lovely - the script was bland and the ending was a dud.
