The Mountain Men (1980) Reviews

The Mountain Men (1980)
Member Rating:
This gorgeously shot western, filmed in the Bridger-Teton National Forest and the Shoshone National Forest, stars Charlton Heston and was written by his son Fraser Clarke Heston. The story concerns two grizzled mountain men -- Bill Tyler (Heston) and Henry Frapp (Brian Keith) -- during the dying days of the fur-trapping era. The plot begins when Running Moon (Victoria Racimo) runs away from her abusive husband Heavy Eagle (Stephen Macht) and comes across the two seedy fur trappers. The mountain men take her in, unaware that Heavy Eagle has dispatched an army of Indian braves to reclaim her. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

My two teenager sons and I, thought it wasn't your average western but actually pretty good! For us, after 30 minutes into the movie, it got better and kept our attention to the end. The rape scene was in the Indian tent, which we fast forward all unnecessary (inappropiate) scenes. One part towards the end, was graphicly bloody that we all agreed that this movie was definitely "R" rated. If your a mom, like me, keep the remote in your hand, with your finger on the "fast forward button" at all times with "R" rated movies.

This movie is as good as they come. A very realistic portrayal of the hard and lonely lives the Mountain Men lived and their loyalty to each other when it was needed. The scenery is breathtaking and the cinematography is worth the price of the DVD alone. I own it in Laser Disc and every person for whom I have ever played the disc has loved it. The principle character played by Charleton Heston is outstanding and his sidekick played by the now deceased Brian Keith shows just what a man Keith was because I believe in this film he was having a great time just simply portraying himself. An outstanding film! Rent or buy and enjoy! In DVD it should be magnificent. The ending scene is one of the best I've ever seen! Ken H.

One of Charlton Heston's better movies. Some very good action scenes.

This film was a blast. Plenty of action and colorful language. The dialogue and visuals fit the time period well. Any fan of mountain man fiction should really enjoy this film. I am surprised I hadn't heard of this film earlier.

I love westerns and have seen many. The making of "Mountain Men" was an attempt to attract those that enjoyed "Jeremiah Johnson", a spectacular film starring Robert Redford. The Mountain Men film was short on character developement, short on plot, and plenty of half witted humor. I was very dissappointed in this film and wish I could get those 90 minutes back.
