Harrison Ford delivers one of his most-acclaimed performances in Peter Weir's adaptation of Paul Theroux's novel (scripted by Paul Schrader). Ford plays Allie Fox, an inventor embittered by the blighted landscape of the contemporary United States. As he tells his oldest son, Charlie (River Phoenix), "Look around you. It's a toilet." He moves his wife (Helen Mirren) and kids -- Charlie, Jerry (Jadrien Steele), April (Hilary Gordon), and Clover (Rebecca Gordon) -- to the rain forests of Central America, where he plans to create a new civilization starting with his own nuclear family. Allie's family compliantly goes along with his scheme to build a free society, but slowly notices that his obsession has turned him into a tyrannical fascist. Rather than create a utopia, Allie's driving egomania demands total subservience from his downtrodden brood. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Another beautiful mind gone amok. Why would anyone who so thoroughly comprehend physics, chemistry, math, biology and the mechanics of it all need God? This story doesn't ask that question, but it does answer it. If you have any interest in delving into an ingenious but flawed personality, this is for you. You may also be interested in the role of the wife who enshrines her husband and worships him at his feet. The children are captives and captivated simultaneously. Extraordinary performances by the entire cast.

Great. Storyline sounds just like today. We haven't moved forwards much at all. Terrific acting, great scenery (filmed in Belize) Harrison Ford before the Indie movies. What a treat this movie is.

I somehow thought I couldn't go too far wrong with a Harrison Ford movie. I kept expecting the movie might develop into something interesting, but after half way thru, I got a little concerned. It was really a waste of my time. The plot was almost interesting, but not very beliveable. The acting wasn't bad but nothing to be acclaimed for. For me, a big disappointment!

I have to agree with other reviewers. This was definitely a strange movie. While Harrison Ford was great in his role as a wacko inventor/family-man, the plot got more and more weird. Call it thought-provoking if you want, but it was just not enjoyable at all.

I love Harrison, but this movie was a bit off-beat. A little bit entertaining, and an interesting idea. Don't rent unless your expectations are not too high. River Phoenix was worth the watch!

One of the worst movies I have ever seen. Actually, it would be a tossup between this and 'Bullworth' . Stupid plot , stupid main character.. In the end, I was hoping(like the children of the main character) that he would die.. Who thinks up this garbage ?? That is scarry..
