Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears (1979)
Member Rating:
Moscow of the late '50s is the initial setting for this movie of three young girls out for love -- the upwardly mobile Lyuda (Irina Muravyova), the secure Tonya (Raisa Ryazanova) and the head-over-heels Katya (Vera Alentova). The film re-engages the trio 20 years later, focusing on their varied life changes. Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears received the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1980. ~ John Bush, Rovi

I've seen this movie three times now with my wife over the span of 20 years, and I still like it. A very honest and insightful exploration of the fates of three young ladies. Full of very typical Russian situations. Often funny, sometimes heart breaking. Certainly takes you through a greater range of emotions than your typical American Romantic Comedy. Highly recommend this Russian Classic!

I would feel pity for people who have no time to see this great movie. I've seen it four times and would love to see it again.

This is absolutely one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. Despite the age of the movie and the fact that you have to read subtitles (unless you know Russian) , this movie will suck you in entirely. The characters are perfectly developed, the subtle humor is scattered at the perfect moments, and emotionally this movie will pull you in like no other. This is a perfect work of art and you will feel the emotions and think about this movie days later. Excellent!

This is a great movie, even if you're not from Moscow. It's universal theme plays well, even with subtitles. I watched with my wife who is form the former Soviet Union, so she could provide some additional information about the background and cultural influences, but it would have been a good movie even if she hadn't been there. It's about society, humanity, relationships between men and women, between men and men, women and women, social position, occupational situations, life! It's set in the Soviet Union, but many of the qualities, relationships, actions and results are universal. It's easy to enjoy this great movie and to have some real discussions following the movie.
