Screen newcomer Dakota Blue Richards stars as young heroine Lyra Belacqua, Casino Royale star Daniel Craig appears as Lyra's ruthless adventurer uncle, Lord Asriel, and Nicole Kidman assumes the glamorous guise of the villainous Mrs. Coulter. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
This could very a very scary movie for young children and I wouldn't take any kid under 12, period.
Having said that, the visual effects are stunningly beautiful and the plot is complicated but interesting.
As for the religious issue, the movie's idea of n animal "demon companion" that reflects the person soul -- is a deceptive title because what's called "a demon" is really just a "totem" or animal symbol. The author really went out of his way to insult those with Judeo-Christian sensibilities by calling a totem, "a demon" and it really was unnecessary.
Is "The Golden Compass" are real threat to a child soul? Probably not, it's not a good enough film for that -- I'd worry more about it scaring them than anything else.
I did leave feeling a bit ripped off, as the story doesn't just "continue" into the next sequel, it leaves what should have been the ending of this film for the sequel.
We just watched "The Golden Compass" over the past weekend,and loved it!
The movie was great for all ages, as it kept us all entertained. We were
literally sitting on the edge of our seats with excitement. We give this one 5 stars;
great family movie with a great story line,wonderful special effects,and outstanding
Nice Family Movie. I Loved Everyone's Demon They Had. They seemed to fit the person they were with. I really enjoy Sam Elliott in Movies He has a very interesting Voice. Makes his Character stand out even more. The voice of the Polar Bear..main character was very interesting also. It fit the character very well. Will add to my collection also. It seems like it was left open for a 2nd movie.
i guess the religious part of this movie many object is that they make witches and demons good things for children to like. that been said, the movie itself was rather disjointed and very hard to follow, christopher lee was wasted for about 5 minutes, all in all we are for sure not going to watch the sequels.
I haven't seen it yet, but I look forward to it all you bible-thumping idiots! Prove there is a "god". The idea of "him" is just a crutch for you weak people who want someone else to take responsbility for your lives! All thumbs UP!
