Monsieur Vincent (1947)
Member Rating:
Pierre Fresnay stars as St. Vincent De Paul in this reverent but realistic French biopic. The film traces "Monsieur Vincent's" progress from his days of forced servitude in Algiers to his entry into the priesthood, culminating with his Herculean efforts on behalf of the ill and destitute in early 17th-century France. Featured in the huge cast are Aime Clairimond as Cardinal de Richelieu and Germaine Dermoz as Queen Anne of Austria. Made under the most trying of conditions over a two-year period, Monsieur Vincent remains the chef d'ouevre of director Maurice Cloche. The film won France's Grand Prix award in 1947, and the following year was honored with Hollywood's "best foreign picture" Oscar. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This black and white subtitled film from 1947 is a moving bio of St. Vincent de Paul's life as a French priest in the 1600s. His constant resolve to better the lives of the poor and ill caused many in the aristocracy to become involved, but ultimately back off when the objects of their charity resented their help. This is a very involving and often depressing look at the way things were, so if you're looking for a feel-good movie, this is not it. If you'd like to watch the story of a selfless man who changed lives, this is extremely well done.

Everyone in 2008 should be looking at the movie. A good example of morality, and great lessons. An excellent interpretation.

It was well worth our time watching this story of Vincent DePaul. I didn't realize until I googled his name, that the order he founded started DePaul Univ.

I liked the content and production of the film, especially considering the period in which it was filmed. As always we lose some of the meaning due to subtitles but the gist of the film is still conveyed well. The scenery, mores and costumes are quite realistic for the period of time this movie portrays. It is well worth watching from both a historical as well as humaniitarian point of view.

Monsieur Vincent. Is the kind of drama that keeps your life in perspective. A must see when you feel that you deserve it all...it humbles you to the point of asking yourself...what is my purpose and whom do I truly selfishly serve?

I like this movie better every time I watch it. I think it's high rating had a lot to do with the type of man St. Vincent de Paul was while the movie I watched the last time got a lot of thumbs down because of what a monster that Bluebeard fellow was.
