Virgin (2003)
Member Rating:
American independent filmmaker Deborah Kampmeier makes her writing and directing debut with the intimate drama Virgin. In a small conservative town, Jessie (Elizabeth Moss) is the outcast teenager of a right-wing Christian family consisting of a strict dad (Peter Gerety), an emotional mom (Robin Wright Penn, who also produced), and an innocent sister (Stephanie Gatschet). After spending an evening with local boy Shane (Charles Socarides), Jessie is convinced that she's pregnant, although she has no memory of actually having sex. Her rebellious behavior isn't completely understood by her family or her community. The conclusion finds her meeting up with two other troubled women. Virgin was shown at the 2003 IFP Los Angeles Film Festival. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

Why can't God be a woman? If you ever questioned the religion you were force-fed, then I think you will like this one. It's very deep. Starts out a little bit slow perhaps, but give it a chance. This is on my list of top favorites of all time.

Indeed hard to watch but most great movies are and as in this case the story is original and the plot is a mystery. The acting is superb and the direction is really inventive and each scene is intricately woven together taking us to unexpected places. These are some of the elements that make a good movie and I guarantee you this one is unforgettable.

Holy surrealism! Quite bizzare but good story. Often hard to watch - not one but TWO very violent and graphic rape scenes. This ones preaching - but most likely to the choir.

Slow to start but as the plot and characters develop and approach their own decision you feel the tension and mystery. The acting is superb and the direction is really inventive and each scene is intricately woven together taking us to unexpected places. On top of my list!

I 100% agree with Cynthia S.! Except I give very few movies 4 1/2 or 5 stars. This was a great film! that's why most of the actors did this film for little or no money.

I'm sorry, but this movie was just plain horrible. I couldn't even stomach it halway through. The only reason why I actually managed to watch it 'til the end was because I figured it was already paid for; I might as well see what wasted money got me. Anyway, the bulk of this film revolves around the fact that she is completely obsessed with a guy named Shane. Though she gets pregnant some thirty minutes into the movie, the pregnancy isn't really dealt with until almost at the very end -- and then it's kept pretty minimal. What really threw me off was the Frances character (her name is never even mentioned). What in the world does she have to do with the story, and more imporantly, what does she have to offer Jessie's character, besides an apparent one-time lesbian relationship? One and a half star for effort, though please don't waste your afternoon watching THIS.
