The 1953 Clark Gable film Mogambo is a remake of Gable's 1932 seriocomic adventure Red Dust. Where the earlier film was lensed on the MGM backlot, Mogambo was shot on location in Africa by director John Ford. Gable is safari leader Victor Marswell, who plays "host" to stranded Eloise Y. Kelly (Ava Gardner, who is no better than she ought to be but is just right for our raffish hero -- the Gardner role was originally played along franker pre-Code lines by Jean Harlow). Anthropologist Donald Nordley (Donald Sinden) hires Victor to lead him into the deepest, darkest jungle. Along for the ride is Donald's wife, Linda (Grace Kelly), outwardly cool as a cucumber but secretly harboring a lust for Victor. Scorned, Kelly tries to kill Victor, but true-blue Eloise takes the blame for the shooting. Reportedly, Grace Kelly carried on an off-camera romance with Clark Gable, which ended when the differences in their ages proved insurmountable. Clark Gable, Ava Gardner, and Grace Kelly make an unbeatable combination. I had never before seen Gardner in a movie and loved her sassiness as she tantalizes Gable and sparrs with Kelly. She comes close to stealing the show--especially in her playful scenes with a baby elephant. This film's in Technicolor and is cut from the same cloth as "The African Queen." Great ending!

They don't make 'em like this one anymore - Real animals in the jungle and in pants - Ava is so firey and passionate - and Grace is so cool and coy - even the filming is amazing because the animals are real and fierce. Finally, there is an element of tongue-in-cheek one always gets with the english on Safari and Gable is unbelieveably sexy as the fearless predator, no different than the animals he stalks this is one of my favorite movies of all time

John Ford was a master of the visual and it shows in this gorgeous movie. With a little steamy romance and a very Hatari-esqu safari, the movie is very enjoyable!

Nice movie staring an older Clark Gable that is set in Africa. All the women love him, and it's interesting how he interacts with married Kelly and Gardner and their jealousness for each other as they seek Gable's attention. And just who is Mogambo? Not Gable, so who is it?

The scenery in this movie is fabulous! Clark Gable is - well, Clark Gable. I happen to love this man. The Ava Gardner character is over the top, but she does a terrific job. It has a highly satisfactory ending.

terrible plot, the nemesis is silly but the scenery is nice & ava was better than expected in her role. clark gable simply coasted thru this near waste of film
