Directed by Lou Ye, Zi Hudie revolves around the underground faction of anti-Nipponese fighters in 1930s Shanghai, just prior to the onset of the Sino-Japanese war. It's only the beginning when Cynthia (Zhang Ziyi), a young Chinese woman, learns the news of her lover Itami's (Toru Nakamura) rapidly approaching return to the military. In a second and even more devastating blow, Cynthia's brother, a contributor to an anti-Japanese newspaper, is killed by a Japanese activist. Three years later, switchboard operator Tang Yiling (Li Bingbing) and Situ (Liu Ye), her fiancé, are introduced to Cynthia after inadvertently heading into a protest held by a resistance group code-named Purple Butterfly, of which Cynthia (who has since changed her name to Ding Hui) has become a part. Ultimately, a botched assassination attempt leaves Situ with a mysterious briefcase; now a suspect himself, Situ is arrested by none other than Itami, who, after reuniting with his old flame, has no idea of her role in a complicit plan to have his boss (Kin Ei) assassinated. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

This movie is full of pauses, the characters don't utter a single word for like the first 30 minutes, there's a lot of reading between "pauses" and silent moments. I gave it a chance, but it was just too boring, not worth it.

How can you tell this is an art house film ? There's minimal dialogue, orchestral music sometimes replaced all other audio, the acting was sedate and the writing took a back seat to the camera lingering too long on a character's face. And for her fans, it's also a Zhang Ziyi close-up festival as her beautiful face carried this film. If you like watching PBS intrigue type movies, similar to those depicting the French underground resistance during WWII, you might like this movie. The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio option came across as stereo. As for extras, there's a trailer for the movie and trailers for three other films. Recommended only for Zhang Ziyi completists.

I totally agree with the other reviews...this movie was soooo disappointing. There are RIDICULOUSLY long pauses, where the camera just sits on an actor's face or scene for MINUTES. There is hardly any dialogue throughout the whole movie. Actually, to sum it up, the movie is nothing but the actors smoking cigarettes and brooding in silence, with just a couple action scenes. The story plot did not follow the description at all, and was difficult to follow, due to the lack of useful dialogue and the actors doing nothing but silent brooding. I didn't understand the ending at all, not sure what that was supposed to convey. Zhang Ziyi is such a talented actress, this movie was a complete waste of her skill. I recommend not wasting your time with this one.
