One of the best-loved films from the idiosyncratic British film studio Ealing Pictures gets an update from the equally idiosyncratic filmmaking team of Joel and Ethan Coen in this offbeat comedy. Marva Munson (Irma P. Hall) is a spry, elderly woman who attends church regularly, doesn't care for loud noises or harsh language, and is looking for a tenant for the spare room in her house. Enter Goldthwait Higginson Dorr (Tom Hanks), a silver-tongued college professor who moves in and gains Munson's permission to use the basement for rehearsals with his "medieval music ensemble." What Munson doesn't know is that Dorr's latest project is not academic, but criminal. Dorr is masterminding the robbery of a riverboat casino, and the fellow musicians in his ensemble are actually the crew he's assembled to pull off the job: foul-mouthed "inside man" Gawain (Marlon Wayans), clumsy demolitions expert Pancake (J.K. Simmons), quiet strong-arm man Lump (Ryan Hurst), and logistical expert The General (Tzi Ma). Despite the best efforts of Dorr and his cohorts (which aren't very impressive), Munson finds out about their scheme, and when she refuses to accept a share of the take in exchange for her silence, Dorr decides the best solution is to silence her permanently. The gospel tunes which grace the soundtrack to The Ladykillers were coordinated by T-Bone Burnett, who also helped assemble the acclaimed song score for the Coen brothers' O Brother, Where Art Thou?. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

i liked this movie and would suggest it to anyone. very funny, i seriously cannot believe it is rated as low as it is. quick note, this movie is RATED R, obviously there isn't any sex scenes...how could it earn that rating? people are freaking over a few swear words..it's not a kids movie. and why does tom hanks just have to be this perfect family man in every movie, he isn't really Forrest Gump. He's an actor, and he is great in this movie, as is the cast. "Easiest thing in the world.."

This movie was surprisingly good. Maybe I should not have been surprised because Tom Hanks is an awesome actor, but somehow, I expected less, considering the synopsis. I loved Hanks' wit and his dialect throught the film. The plotline kept me laughing throughout. This really was a very good movie.

This movie should be for anyone who likes the Coen Bros. dark sense of humor. Tom Hanks is very good in his role and so is the old lady. I don't know where they found her but she is hilarious.

Ugh. How could the Coen Brothers and Tom Hanks get a project so wrong? I love the Coen Brothers...at least everything they've done but this... Plodding story, bizarre character portrayals...oddball and overwrought twists. Not a entertaining film.

I was so disappointed in this movie, of what I saw. I liked the 1st 10 minutes. Then it changed gears and the foul language was so overwhelming I had to turn it off. What a shame Tom Hanks set himself up for this one. Try again Tom.

This is a very strange movie indeed! But amusing at the same time. I liked its poetic justice. . if you know what I mean. The bridge and barge were creepy. Music was delightful! I enjoyed it.
