Adapted from a Stephen King novel, Rob Reiner's Misery cast James Caan as a writer at a career crossroads. The film opens with Paul Sheldon (Caan) completing work on his latest novel, a break from his popular series of novels featuring the character Misery Chastain. He gets into a severe car accident and is saved by Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), a reclusive woman who nurses him back to health. Annie is a huge fan of the Misery novels, and she finishes reading the new one while Paul is convalescing. She becomes enraged when she discovers that Paul has killed off Misery. Annie injures Paul's foot severely so that he is unable to leave her house, and forces him to write a new Misery novel. A local sheriff (Richard Farnsworth) and Paul's agent (Lauren Bacall) both attempt to track down what happened to the missing author. Misery shot the relatively unknown Kathy Bates to stardom, winning her one of the few Best Actress Oscars ever bestowed for portraying an evil character. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

Viscerally thrilling, this is King's story "set to film." Kathy Bates is breathtakingly "insane" or at least "possessed" and I believe this to be one of the best uses of James Caan's talents in years. I loved this film when it came out in 1991 and loved it the second time when I saw it on DVD only a week ago (2010). I think it's destined to be one of the "modern classics."

A very good thriller by King. He relies on pure thrill rather than gore and cgi. I find it to be very good :)

I am not a Stephen King fan, but Misery was one of his better stories. James Caan was good and Kathy Bates had her moments although I think she overacted a lot of her scenes. This movie's strong point was suspense--lots of "hurry up!" moments.

Excellent movie. I could not move. You don't find too many that hold your attention like Misery. Well done.

I've been wanting to see this movie for some time and finally got my hands on a copy. I was rivited throughout the whole film, wondering what would happen next. Kathy Bates has been a favourite actress of mine for some time now, and she is bone chilling in this movie. I enjoyed slowly watching her go mad, I almost felt sympathy for her until certain parts of the film. This one I will certainly be adding to my collection, and I'll be looking into purchasing the book as well - I'm an advid Stephen King fan. I suggest this film for anybody who loves a good thriller.
