Directed by Taylor Hackford, this biopic profiles the life of legendary musician Ray Charles. Despite humble beginnings and the loss of his eyesight due to glaucoma at the age of six, Charles, depicted by Jamie Foxx, would nonetheless become an icon in both the music industry and the civil rights era. While the film delves into his problems with drugs and women, the bulk of the story details his career; among the highlights of that career are 12 Grammy awards and 11 R&B chart-toppers, such as "Unchain My Heart," "Hit the Road, Jack," "Georgia," "Doin' the Mess Around," and "Hallelujah I Just Love Her So." Also among the cast are Larenz Tate as Quincy Jones, as well as Regina King, Kerry Washington, and Clifton Powell. Charles' son, Ray Charles Jr. helped produce the film. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

Jamie Foxx's characterization of Ray Charles distinguishes him as nailing one of the greatest roles an actor has ever taken. In short, he was outstanding! This is definitely a movie to watch to understand Ray Charles' life, business history, personal relationships, and his music evolution. Watch the movie and you'll see why -- it speaks for itself.

#1 bio-pic of the year! Superb portrayal of the musical genius of Ray Charles by Jamie Foxx. An outstanding effort from a fine supporting cast. Beautifully filmed, with great music and sound; a soulful moral tale of a man growing up black and handicapped in the American music business. WE MISS YOU RAY!

Jamie Fox mimics Ray Charles to the T. an unbelievable performance, if you like music see this. If you like good acting see this, if you’re impatient, don’t. It is a bit drawn out. Two thumbs up and a index finger.

I found Jamie Fox's performance to be great. He did a wonderful job in this acting role! On the other hand Ray's music is before my time and I do not care for it. On a biography stand point, yes, it did display Ray's life, but I found it to all be very depressing. I am sure if you enjoy Rays music or a big fan of his you will find this movie more enjoyable.

Better than the later Walk the Line (which was also great), this movie is poignant in that Charles died soon after its completion. Charles was closely involved in its production, singing all the sings, and not interfering with the utterly honest portrayal of himself at all. Jamie Foxx fully deserved to win the Oscar for this role, in which he is totally convincing, only breaking the illusion briefly at the end of the movie when he removes his dark glasses for the first time. Also good (and uncredited here at Blockbuster) was the unlikely casting of Curtis Armstrong as the great music producer Ahmet Ertegun. Overall, one of the best biopics ever made.

This movie was a flop. Ray used drugs and cheated on his wife. Not a good role model at all. The performances that the actors and actresses gave was outstanding. They really made this movie seem real.

More than a mere impersonanation - Jamie Fox does a brilliant and honest character study of Ray Charles.

The performances were outstanding, and it goes without saying that the music was also outstanding. Well worth watching.

Jamie Fox carried this movie, and was excellent. Ray Charles became a great musician and performer. His perfomance life attracted thousands of fans, but there was certainly a dark side behind his public persona. The movie showed how people used him, and how he used people. I'm glad this movie showed both sides of him and wasn't just a fawning biopic.
