Directed by Taylor Hackford, this biopic profiles the life of legendary musician Ray Charles. Despite humble beginnings and the loss of his eyesight due to glaucoma at the age of six, Charles, depicted by Jamie Foxx, would nonetheless become an icon in both the music industry and the civil rights era. While the film delves into his problems with drugs and women, the bulk of the story details his career; among the highlights of that career are 12 Grammy awards and 11 R&B chart-toppers, such as "Unchain My Heart," "Hit the Road, Jack," "Georgia," "Doin' the Mess Around," and "Hallelujah I Just Love Her So." Also among the cast are Larenz Tate as Quincy Jones, as well as Regina King, Kerry Washington, and Clifton Powell. Charles' son, Ray Charles Jr. helped produce the film. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

Jamie Foxx definitely deserved Best Actor for his portrayal of Ray Charles. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Performances by all of the actors were excellent!

Jamie Foxx truly earned the Acadamy Award for Best Actor, this movie also won the Acadamy Award for Best Sound. If you are a Ray Charles fan you will love this movie. It shows Ray through the years and what happened and how he lost his eye sight and the battle with drug's.

Very disappointing, dull movie.

Excellent film! Jamie Fox is incredible in his portrayal of an amazing icon who was a real human being, replete with character defects and brilliance. I'm glad things weren't sugar coated. I loved the scene where Ray had a spiritual experience while in rehab - powerful! A must see!

It was a moving, honest film. If you're a fan of our rich musical history or Ray Charles, and "real people" , the talents of Jamie Foxx and other award-deserving or winning actors. Worth it!

Very good movie although the ending seemed a bit rushed. The movie provided a lot of detail I did not know about Ray Charles. The end, however, just seemed to say that everything up to a certain point was important and everything after that could just be handled with a quick montage, written words, and album covers. I would have liked to see a bit more detail of his later life.

This is an excellent picture. I would recommend watching the theatrical version prior to watching the extended version. As the story will probably be a little easier to follow.

Not too much going on in the bonus disk. If you watched the extended version of the movie (well worth doing) you saw the deleted scenes. There is one shortish interview and much of that material appears in the only other featurette. Other than that there is no there there.

I ended up renting "Ray" at the Blockbuster store since it was wait-listed here, so it came with the bonus disc included. However, I wouldn't recommend wasting a spot on your "Q" where it counts as a separate selection. If you watch the extended version of the movie on the main disc, you will have already seen all the deleted scenes, and there isn't much else of any real importance.

More than a mere impersonanation - Jamie Fox does a brilliant and honest character study of Ray Charles.

The performances were outstanding, and it goes without saying that the music was also outstanding. Well worth watching.

Jamie Fox carried this movie, and was excellent. Ray Charles became a great musician and performer. His perfomance life attracted thousands of fans, but there was certainly a dark side behind his public persona. The movie showed how people used him, and how he used people. I'm glad this movie showed both sides of him and wasn't just a fawning biopic.
