The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (1944)

This wild, once-controversial comedy stars Betty Hutton as Trudy Kockenlocker, a man-crazy single girl whose favorite pastime involves entertaining every visiting GI in town. One morning after a particularly wild night, Trudy labors under the apprehension that last eve, she'd married a soldier named Ratzkywatzky or something. Evidently something had happened that night, for soon Trudy discovers that she's pregnant. She hides this information from her bombastic policeman father (William Demarest), and before long, Trudy's on-again, off-again boyfriend, hapless bank clerk Norval Jones (Eddie Bracken), gets tapped to be the father of the unborn child. He takes the assumed name Ratzkywatzky and poses as a GI (in a World War I uniform!). Unfortunately, this only leads to further complications.
Disasters pile up thick and fast, and before long Norval is facing arrest on a variety of charges. Then the miracle of the title occurs. This vintage Preston Sturges farce plays so fast and loose with the censorial restrictions of mid-1940s Hollywood that critic James Agee was moved to comment that, "the Hays office must have been raped in its sleep." As usual, Sturges populates his cast with steadfast members of his stock company-- including, in guest roles, Brian Donlevy and Akim Tamiroff, the stars of his previous film, The Great McGinty. Originally filmed in 1942, Miracle was held from release for an inordinate period of time. The picture was remade (and considerably laundered) as the 1958 Jerry Lewis vehicle Rock-a-bye Baby.

THis movie is cute and funny and it has modern elements that most would not expect to come from a movie filmed in the 1940's. I have shown this several times in several groups and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are so funny and the story is well written. I reccoment this for a family movie night or a classic movie night.

Our whole family enjoyed this laugh-a-minute story. It's a bit risque for the time period, but this is completely overridden by the comedic performances of the main characters. Eddie Bracken plays a sweet yet naive boy next-door who finds himself getting the girl of his dreams through questionable circumstances. William Demarest is a hapless father of two daughters, the youngest of whom being a quick-witted and surprisingly strong supporting character. The repeated tug-of-wars between all the main characters are fabulous! The only things that tops it all is the ending and the accompanying "news headlines". You'll end up laughing until you're in tears by the time it's over.

Nice lighthearted comedy of errors & romance that thumbs its nose at the heavy-handed censorship of the 30s-60s. Good writing & directing.

the 2 documentaries were better than the movie. this was more like a slapstick tv episode than a good movie. i am biased towards 'witty' humour like philadelphia story or my man godfrey. we bought the preston sturges boxset & i'm glad this movie was not included.

I really enjoyed this movie. I had never seen a movie with Betty Hutton or Eddie Bracken before, and I thought they were both very funny. Usually my high school/college age children aren't very enthusiastic about watching "older movies" with me, but after watching it alone, I talked my oldest daughter into watching it with me, and she commented how funny it was later on to one of her friends.

Pretty bad. Horribly amateurish. Like a grade school play. I can't believe that we thought this type of non-funny humor was acceptable in the 40's. We rented it because we liked Betty Hutton, but she looked too old for the role. I'd rate it 2 stars.

An old, silly, funny and delightful film.

This is just silly and delishious war time comedy starrng Betty Hutton as "Trudy Kockenlocker" who finds herself in a rather delicate condition after partying all night at a "Kiss the boys goodbye" dance. Eddie Bracken is the unsuspecting bumbling lovable hero and William Demerest (Uncle Charlie of My 3 Sons) plays her widower father and town cop. Perfect example of movies of this era and an enjoyable one at that.

1940s corn. A silo full of it. Kept waiting for the "humor" to rise above infantile. Didn't happen.
