For his sophomore stab at directing, actor/writer/director Jon Favreau (Swingers, Made), took on this holiday comedy starring Saturday Night Live-alum Will Ferrell. Ferrell stars as Buddy, a regular-sized man who was raised as an elf by Santa Claus (Edward Asner). When the news is finally broken to Buddy that he's not a real elf, he decides to head back to his place of birth, New York City, in search of his biological family. Elf also stars James Caan, Mary Steenburgen, Zooey Deschanel, and Bob Newhart. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

This is one of my favorite movies. I love how Will Ferrell pulls off acting so innocent and full of wonderment; although not Oscar-worthy, it's good acting in my opinion. A light-hearted and funny family movie.

instant Christmas classic. It has everything you could want in a holiday movie. Absurd humor, Christmas spirit, and Will Ferrell in tights?! I could watch this year after year. Put this on my December list.

Watch out Grinch, Mr. Scrooge, and Ralphie...Buddy the elf has become a holiday staple for the DVD player ever since this movie came out in 2003. Will Ferrell is utterly silly and childlike (making him perfect in this role) as Buddy a human raised in the North Pole, who comes to New York to find his birth dad. Hilarity ensues, elf/man falls in love, seeks dad's approval, yada yada yada. Hey, it's a Christmas film so don't expect Shakespeare. Just enjoy this movie for what it is. And yes, it's worth buying even (the bonus games on the DVD are cute!)

This is a cute movie, but I found myself wishing it could be more on a level with "Miracle on 34th Street," to which it obviously owes some credit. Ferrell does a great job, even if he is just acting like an overgrown child--watch his reaction when a perfume saleswoman offers him "fruit spray," which he sprays directly in his mouth. There are also funny details, such as the references to old Rankin-Bass animated TV specials, and in one scene Ferrell's elf is shown on the local news station as if it were a Bigfoot sighting. He and Steenburgen are definitely in the spirit, but otherwise the movie seems anecdotal and as fake as an arftificial tree.
