Member Rating:
A conflicted bible college student faces the wrath of his homophobic classmates when his true sexuality is revealed in filmmaker Jeff London's sophomore drama. Upon returning to school following summer break, Paul's internal conflict rages as he struggles to find common ground between his spirituality and sexuality. When Paul makes the acquaintance of new student Alex, their quickly deepening friendship begins to draw the suspicions of their classmates. Increasingly targeted for harassment by the intolerant student body and threatened with expulsion by the school board, Paul and Alex find that the same people who preach peace and forgiveness seem unable to look beyond their sexuality to accept them on a spiritual level. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

It is low budget and it shows...really bad. They quote various Bible verses throughout the movie, but they take them out of context and do not handle them accurately. The acting is bad. The dialog is forced. The storyline is predictable. The lead actor is not good looking, although two of the supporting actors are. At times, it appears to be a home movie. It tends to be a depressing movie; so if you're suicidal, don't watch it! I recommend watching the trailer before you rent or buy it; if you think you like the trailer, then give it a shot. Otherwise, don't waste you time by renting it, and don't consider buying it.

This film is reminiscent of the gay films from the late 80s and into the 90s--the story has potential, but the acting, writing and directing lack the professionalism we're seeing more and more often in more recent history. Stll, the fact that the film is based on a true story gives it some added depth, and some of the younger actors' acting is passable, given their lines, the direction and the budget. The older adults' acting leaves much to be desired. Rent this if you've seen most of the other gay-themed films available and you're looking for something new; not a keeper, though, in my book.

Boy, what a waste of resources. Amateurish to the max. Maybe these writers, actors, directors will get better in time, but this effort should be relegated to film class. And, the pace couldn't be any slower. I am amazed I had the patience to wait for the laughably bizarre ending.

This has got to be one of the worst films that I have ever seen. The pacing is horribly slow, the script makes no sense in many places and the acting was awful.

This movie was so boring. It looks like a low budget college homework assignment. The guys were simply reading their lines. There was no acting. What a waste of time.

The movie was certainly a low budget B level movie but I knew that before viewing, so maybe my expectations weren't that high. At the beginning they said the story was true but I don't see any other information here to research what parts were real. I enjoyed seeing the students and it was entertaining for an evening. Seemed to drag on a bit though. Saw a true movie a while back about a similar thing hapening in the Army.

Film quality was poor - ameaturish. The story line was marginal - barely believable in some respects otherwise it was exaggerated - over the the top. The story certainly could occur at a Christian college, but NOT at a strict, fundamental Bible college. The plot development was poorly played out. Although we watched it [painfully] till the end ( hoping it would improve), we found it most dissappointing.

This movie was bad on a grand scale. With the exception of Mike Dolan the cast was really lousy. I've seen better acting and story lines in porn than in this movie.

The Last Year is the story of gay young men in their senior year at a conservative Christian college. The strong story line and performances set this low-budget flick apart from many gay offerings on Blockbuster.com. The script is basically well written and the characters and believable, and the lead actors are both convincing and appealing. (The adults are less so.) The production betrays it as the low-budget production that it is, but the central conflict is one that a gay person who comes from a Christian upbringing can relate to. (I enjoyed the movie in large part because I could relate to it and was glad to see the story told.) The college dean may remind viewers of Ted Haggard in more ways than one. Ultimately the film leaves the viewer with a vision of love and hope. It is at times slow but seemed to me to be a labor of love, and worth watching.
