For his first film since 1998's Twilight, acclaimed director Robert Benton helmed this tense drama written by Fatal Attraction co-scribe Nicholas Meyer and based on the novel of the same name by Philip Roth. Set in the late '90s at the height of the Clinton sex-scandal, The Human Stain stars Anthony Hopkins as Coleman Silk, a respected professor at a New England college who suddenly finds his life unraveling after a comment he makes about some African-American students is misinterpreted as a racial slur. As the scandal heats up, Nathan Zuckerman (Gary Sinise), a writer researching a biography of Silk, begins to dig deeper and deeper into Silk's life. Eventually, matters are made worse when an affair with a young married janitor named Faunia Farley (Nicole Kidman) is exposed. But amid the controversy, Silk must struggle to keep his greatest secret, a secret he's held for the majority of his life, from becoming public. Ed Harris, who previously worked with Benton in 1984's Places in the Heart, also stars. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

Anthony Hopkins & Nicole Kidman were wonderful in this movie...BUT Nicole Kidman dug really deep to become the character she played... OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE.......

As a huge Anthony Hopkins fan, I can forgive a lot, but there wasn't much to forgive except the pace of the movie, clearly something beyond his control. Kidman was overkill for a trampy role any actress worth her salt could have played; perhaps they felt Hopkins needed a counterweight, if so, I disagree -- he's completely capable of carrying any movie solo. The only justification for two heavy hitters would have been the need to compensate for the dragging script. The only other thing noteworthy was the tasteful sexuality, something I for one appreciate as opposed to skin saturation. Overall, I've seen better; I've seen worse!

Anthony Hopkins, a favorite of mine, was great as always. Nichole Kidman's character got on my last nerve. Perhaps someone else could have been more convincing and less melodramatic as "trailer park trash".

I HATE Nicole Kidman, just can't stand to watch her act... But, she was great in this. Completely different character then in any other movie she ever played. I would definitly recommend this movie. It was very good. And lets not forget the eye candy through out (Wentworth Miller) I never tire of looking at him :o)

Every single character is very complex in this movie and the bits and pieces that we see of them, I think, are just a small portion of how lonely and broken they are inside. Coleman’s struggle with his ethnicity causes much stress in his life to the point where he chooses to live his life denying being African-American. Hopkins does an excellent job of impersonating Coleman. I was very impressed with Miller’s performance and his ability to match his acting style to Hopkins’. If you don’t feel and/or sympathize with Coleman’s agony when he is rejected because of his ethnicity, you will probably not understand this movie at all. This becomes very clear when Miller asks: “What about me? What about just being proud of being me? It's my life.” A clear rejection of “a world bound by race.” This is definitely an intense movie and not the type that you watch eating bonbons! You have to carefully listen to the characters’ interaction to understand why they are drawn to each other.

Dont rent this. The story is far fetched. The cinematography is the only plus. Dont waste your time.
