For his first film since 1998's Twilight, acclaimed director Robert Benton helmed this tense drama written by Fatal Attraction co-scribe Nicholas Meyer and based on the novel of the same name by Philip Roth. Set in the late '90s at the height of the Clinton sex-scandal, The Human Stain stars Anthony Hopkins as Coleman Silk, a respected professor at a New England college who suddenly finds his life unraveling after a comment he makes about some African-American students is misinterpreted as a racial slur. As the scandal heats up, Nathan Zuckerman (Gary Sinise), a writer researching a biography of Silk, begins to dig deeper and deeper into Silk's life. Eventually, matters are made worse when an affair with a young married janitor named Faunia Farley (Nicole Kidman) is exposed. But amid the controversy, Silk must struggle to keep his greatest secret, a secret he's held for the majority of his life, from becoming public. Ed Harris, who previously worked with Benton in 1984's Places in the Heart, also stars. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

This movie was unbelievably good with an excellent story and 3 very talented actors. I am not a fan of Nicole Kidman, but for the first time, I saw her step outside of herself and give an incredibly strong performance! Very moving and passionate - I highly recommend it!

...at times a bit hard to follow. And, the ending left me hanging a bit wondering what message I was to take from the film or how Sinese's character was going to carry on with the story. Hopkins was solid as always, but Kidman was a bit mis-cast as the trailer park trash who overly used the "f word." Poor girl sure is skinny! Still, a film worth watching.

Great "story telling" movie with a twist that is very interesting.

I thought this was a great story and was very well told through good acting. I think it was very realistic. Many people hide or lie about their heritage, religion, race and even gender. Many "sensible" people also find themselves getting involved with not so sensible people and end up in bad situations. Watch Dateline or 60 minutes a couple times and you will see much more outlandish, but true, stories! I thought this was a great movie and really made the viewer think.

This movie was very slow. I dont think Anthony Hopkins was up to par in this movie and the same for Nicole Kidman. I think she was misplaced in this movie! I have mixed emotions about the story though. I dont think this is a movie that you either love or hate but at the end you think to yourself "did I like it or not".

Anthony Hopkins was wonderful. It was hard to believe that the younger version was the same person in adulthood. This did not diminish his acting. Nicole Kidman's character portrayal was disappointing. Not much range and similar to other roles she plays. The story was very good and held my interest.

I'm not sure what other reviewers are thinking but this movie was better than average. DULL??? Please, it's not a Arnie movie or the "Rock" action flick. It's well worth the rent, just read the details of the movie and know what you are getting. I didn't know anything about the movie and was pleasantly surprised, just pay attention to the dialogue. I'm not particularly a Kidman fan but I loved her in this. If you read a book once in awhile you will like the movie.

Anthony Hopkins shows he isn't a "catch phrase" actor. I enjoyed it! other reviews mention this film as slow; not all movies are Ahnold adventures! this is one of those movies that makes you think, or look back after it's over. I usually see the twist before it's revealed, but this one caught me off guard.

Interesting storyline, poorly executed. Neither Anthony Hopkins nor Nicole Kidman brought much credibility to their roles. They're both great actors but whoever cast them for this film did them and the viewing audience a HUGE disservice.
