For his first film since 1998's Twilight, acclaimed director Robert Benton helmed this tense drama written by Fatal Attraction co-scribe Nicholas Meyer and based on the novel of the same name by Philip Roth. Set in the late '90s at the height of the Clinton sex-scandal, The Human Stain stars Anthony Hopkins as Coleman Silk, a respected professor at a New England college who suddenly finds his life unraveling after a comment he makes about some African-American students is misinterpreted as a racial slur. As the scandal heats up, Nathan Zuckerman (Gary Sinise), a writer researching a biography of Silk, begins to dig deeper and deeper into Silk's life. Eventually, matters are made worse when an affair with a young married janitor named Faunia Farley (Nicole Kidman) is exposed. But amid the controversy, Silk must struggle to keep his greatest secret, a secret he's held for the majority of his life, from becoming public. Ed Harris, who previously worked with Benton in 1984's Places in the Heart, also stars. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

Well done. I'm still thinking about the implications!

The movie succeeds in making this spring-fall romance plausible. It is both an excellent thriller and a great psychological drama. Nicole Kidman transcends her superstar identity and meld into a hinterland pauper who lives in fear of her abusive Viet Nam vet ex-husband. Anthony Hopkins is brilliant as always. Ed Harris is frighteningly effective. The end id haunting. Don't plan to go to bed anytime soon after you see this. The movie stays with you for a while. Great dancing scene with Gary Sinise and Anthony Hopkins. Pull the shades down when you watch this. I used to be underwhelmed by Kidman's acting (maybe because of the unconvincing Eyes Wide Shut) - I get it now. She is brilliant.

A movie about a man who is unable to understand his own heritage. I found it interesting, profound and a bit hard to understand the ending.

Thought it was a good story line and content but a bit of a stretch that Anthony Hopkins is a black man. Nicole is Nicole.

This was a very good, thoughtful movie, great actors and a story you could start a book club on, it presents so many issues. I recommend it.

I would class this film as pretty heavy,,emotionally and visually....the sex scenes were a bit overdone and Nicole's character seemed somewhat psychotic at times. The race bit was hard to swallow since the lad didn't appear in the least like his race..Why?? Just for the sake of the script! This movie did not impress me..so much for the script. I got bored despite Tony Hopkin's performance...I give it 3 stars..

I returned this disc Saturday, 2/12 becuase it was cracked. I do not see anywhere to report it as it seems to no longer be in the "at home" box. I would like a new DVD of the movie...thank you.

The story is about people who have things they don't want others to know. The movie gets very edgy when ex-husband Ed harrie is in th scenes.
