Jeff Chandler stars as American brigadier-general Merrill, commanding a regiment in Burma during World War II. Surrounded on all sides by the Japanese, Merrill's Marauders nonetheless accomplish their objective-only to be ordered into another mission with barely a chance to breathe. Again and again this happens, and again and again the Marauders remain fiercely loyal to the dauntless Merrill. This "war doesn't take vacations" theme is a common one running through the combat films of director Samuel Fuller; only the censorship strictures of 1962 prohibit Fuller from fully illustrating the sheer Hell that was the Pacific War. This an excellent retelling of the allies invasion of Burma in 1944. This movie tends to get over looked much like the theater of war that it was set in; of all the excellent WWII films that came out in the 1950's, 60's and 70's this one doesn't usually get put high on anyone's list of movies in the genre. It is well worth watching, the viewer gets sucked into the tension and feeling of weariness that these American soldiers went through in their four months behind enemy lines. Directed by Samuel Fuller who was himself a decorated member of the Big Red One during WWII. This is highly recommended for those who like this genre of film.

They don't make films like this anymore! There is an unbelievable reality in battle sequences on both sides..hard to believe its a film.. wonderful acting by Jeff Chandler and Ty Hardin and the entire cast...superb film!! 4 stars!!

Before he left Hollywood after a long career making different genres of films from westerns to war films, the late director Samuel Fuller finished his sojurn here with a true story depicting the bitter siege in Burma by Colonel Merrill. Jeff Chandler in his last performance here delivers solid work as the beleagured officier and he's abetted by practically every actor and character actor from the Warner Bros. staple--Will Hutchins (Sugarfoot), Peter Brown, Claude Akins and Andrew Duggan. There's an suspenseful skirmish in railway station which only Fuller could deliver (he was a WWII vet himself). Next to "The Big Red One" with Lee Marvin, this is one of Fuller's best films. Heartily recommended to all war buffs.

This is an older movie, but is in color, and based on historical events. I like how they lead in with a background to the Burma campaign in WW II, which a lot of people don't know about. While the language and violence are toned down to fit the era of its release a bit more, and that makes it perhaps a bit less realistic, it is an easier watch. And don't rent Battle of the Bulge. It is ludicrous
