Unabashedly sentimental, this war film was produced by David Putnam in partnership with Catherine Wyler, whose father William Wyler directed an acclaimed documentary about the real-life events depicted in the film. The ensemble cast is composed of ten young actors portraying the crew of the World War II B-17 bomber "Memphis Belle," anticipating their 25th and last mission before they will be able to go home. Having won fame with their exemplary war record and amazing lack of casualties, they expect their final assignment to be a cakewalk, but instead they are ordered to bomb Bremen, a heavily defended German city that will mean almost certain loss of life. Led by their experienced captain, Dennis Dearborn (Matthew Modine), the crew shoulders its responsibility despite mounting fears, while their commanding officer (David Strathairn) and a public relations specialist (John Lithgow) wait anxiously for their return. Aboard the bomber, there's friction between Dearborn and his disgruntled co-pilot Luke Sinclair (Tate Donovan), and between medical officer Val Kozlowski (Billy Zane) and the rest of the crew when it's learned that Val lied about his qualifications. Despite impressive technical credits and a popular Generation-X cast, Memphis Belle (1990) was a box-office disappointment, its enthusiastic patriotism considered a throwback to a bygone era of filmmaking. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

This is one you purchase to watch over and over again. Great acting and action. One to have, for sure.

When I watched this movie a few years ago I thought it was great. Since reading the book by Belle pilot Morgan I don't like the movie in the context of a historical look back at a famed B17 bomber & its crew. The Belle's final mission is inaccurate as well as the crews' names and character. Being the first crew to complete their 25th mission and their excitement at having accomplished it is worthy of attaching the name "Memphis Belle." Viewing the movie in the context of a generic representation of a B17 crew and one of their bombing missions....it's great.

This is a really enjoyable film for WW2 buffs and especially fans of the B17 Flying Fortress. I saw a documentary on the making of this movie, and alas, the characters were embellished for Hollywoods' sake. I was fortunate enough to speak with Bob Morgan, the captain of the "Belle" for some length at an airshow and he had few qualms about this. The attention to detail is first rate, as well as the sense of "feel" for the period. That B-17 was a handsome brute!

the beginning is slow, it takes a while before you see any action. I know nothing about the military, but I have a hard time believing that the guys really acted like that, always so flip and wisecracking. Come ON! that almost ruined it for me. when they actually head out on their mission. then it gets a lot better. the footage while flying and shooting and stuff was real good.

Not a bad movie, but definately painful to watch as an active duty Air Force enlistee. It's very hard to imagine the utter lack fo disipline they display...but then, this *is* a movie. Think of it like Swordfish; if you know anything about computing, the movie becomes painful. Likewise, if you know anything about airplanes and military service, this movie becomes a bit goofy.

It is one of the greats. I wish there could be more like it! I love how the story develops and the amazing cinematography with the Memphis Bell. It makes you so proud of what our fellow Americans accomplished in the second war with death ready to take them at any moment.

Good story....excellent special effects...definitely shows what life was like for an American bomber pilot in England during WWII...Excellent performance from Modine and supporting cast...as close to real as real could get...no extra "spit and polish"added...Good movie for WWII aircraft buffs like myself...

60th Anniversary disc of the 1944 Documentary, not the 1990 Matthew Modine version. So unless there are two discs in the case, and they are sending the wrong one, order the other 1990 version for the 1990 Remake.
