Based on the novel by Dodie Smith (101 Dalmatians), director Tim Fywell's comic romance follows 17-year-old Cassandra Mortmain (Romola Garai) and her quirky family as they attempt to make the best of their meager existence in a crumbling English castle. While her father (Bill Nighy) has been struggling for over a decade to repeat the success of his debut novel, her beautiful sister Rose (Rose Byrne) frequently voices her displeasure with their current situation, and nudist stepmother Topaz (Tara Fitzgerald) proves little help at much of anything. The arrival of American landlord Simon Cotton (Henry Thomas) and his brother Neil (Marc Blucas) provides a glimmer of hope as the initially repelled Rose soon takes a liking to Simon and the two arrange to marry. Lost in the chaotic shuffle of marriage plans and increasingly complicated relationships, the hapless Cassandra soon begins to blossom into womanhood as she experiences aspects of life that were heretofore unknown to her. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Beautiful, poignant, coming of age movie. The youngest daughter of a destitute English family chronicles their complex relationships and romantic entanglements as they live in a crumbling old castle. I really liked this movie and cared about the characters. There are no good guys and bad guys, just flawed people who care for each other, but don't always know how to show it.

Great film. Engaging characters and storyline. If you like historical drama, you will like this film.

Most of the drama occurs around the younger sister, which is unique because the key character is the older one. I was dissapointed with Cassandra's no happy ever after ending. She fixes everyones life but in the end she is alone. Sad! Very, very, sad. I also didn't like the changing of partners in the movie.

The movie is not a comedy, so don't rent it for laughs. The movie is a bit complicated but I was drawn to continue to watch - hoping against hope that all would work out well for Cassandra. In the end, its more like life than fantasy. Good acting by all the cast.

definetely not a comedy, OK ending (wasn't expecting otherwise), one of those movies you kind of expect what's going to happen but keep watching to prove yourself right. Some characters are not easy to understand and others you just don't.

This film is definetly written for teenage girls. While it was a fair examination of family problems and young love, I found it a bit tedious at times. The scenery and cinementography were good though.

This was a nice film to watch, but the ending seemed rushed and unplanned as if Fywell suddenly got bored with the story and wanted to wrap it up in a hurry.
