The Amazon rain forest is a living laboratory for Dr. Robert Campbell (Sean Connery), a reclusive research scientist living with a Brazilian native tribe. Campbell has accidentally discovered a flower extract that cures cancer, but has been unable to duplicate the formula. With the assistance of Dr. Crane (Lorraine Bracco), he explores every possible chemical derivative, but continues to fail. When a child in the village is near death from a tumor pressing against his trachea, Campbell and Crane stand against each other on the moral issue to use the last of the successful serum to save him or to keep it for further analysis. At the last moment, Crane reconsiders, and agrees to save the child. At the same time, commercial loggers begin to creep ever closer to the village, and government officials demand the tribe's relocation. With only yards remaining between the bulldozers and the tribe, Campbell discovers a vital clue to the elusive elixir he seeks. His attempt to stop the workmen results in violence and a raging forest fire which destroys his lab equipment and the natives' village. The story ends with Campbell, Crane, and the tribe pushing deeper into the jungle in search of new answers.

In a change of pace from his usual action film fare, the skilled work of director John McTiernan brings emotional depth to what would otherwise be just another pro-environmental propaganda film. Connery, who had starred in McTiernan's crowd-pleasing 1989 film The Hunt for Red October, gives a convincing performance as the determined and complex researcher haunted by mistakes of the past. Bracco's character adds the realistic humor of the city scientist adjusting to Spartan life in the trees, but she does so with both strength and dignity. The constant bickering of two equally obstinate scientists gives a mild "honeymooners in the jungle" quality. Filmed in the Mexican rain forest, the canopy is captured in breathtaking cinematography. ~ Lucinda Ramsey, Rovi

Without a doubt, this has to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Sean Connery and Lorraine Bracco had no chemistry whatsoever. What a casting mistake! I guess it was supposed to be like "I Love Lucy" in the jungle, but I found no charm or humor in it.

While I truly liked the plot and story line, Lorraine Bracco's character was so over the top and so incredibly ridiculous that it detracted from the whole movie. Her "Bronx" accent was so bad and her fits of anger were so over done that I would have a hard time recommending this to anyone IF it weren't for Sean Connery and the story. Because of that, I rated it a two and a half stars and will say that it is not a waste of time if you can overlook the bad acting.

I loved this movie. How can a movie be bad when you have the one and only amazing Sean Connery in it. His appeal goes beyond being sexy to his incrediable voice. I personally did not think that Lorraine Bracco was the right one to play opposite Sean - they just did not fit character wise.

The movie has beautiful photography, good drama, good character with the exception of Lorraine Bracco. I recommend the movie to any one.

Connery is at his best here. You can't help but think that a little of his chauvanistic attitude comes through, but the story contains a mystery that carries you all the way through. The scenery and cinematography are excellent, although the romantic component is a little weak. I would recommend this movie to anyone who really wants to enjoy a movie with a great story to tell.

Out of all of the Sean Connery movies I have seen, the Medicine Man is my favorate one. It makes my laugh at a romance going on between the two main characters, when all they do is bicker with each other. This movie shows just how beautiful the rain forest is, and it's importance to the people who live there . I have seen this movie so many times, and I still can't get enough of it. I love the characters and I wish this story was true. It is about nature and science all wrapped up in one, along with hope for our future's fight against cancer. I feel good after I watch this movie. The character of Dr. Rae Crane made me laugh out loud so many times, actress Lorraine Bracco did a great job with this character. Laugh with actor Sean Connery, and feel the pain of Dr. Campbell's past mistakes that he can't put behind him. See it, I'm sure you won't be sorry. Laugh with the movie yet feel as the characters feel.

Dispite bad reviews, this movie was much enjoyed by my husband and me. The scenery was gorgeous. The plot was right on and in tune with todays news about the disappearing rain forest, the lower quality of breathable air around the world, the possibility of finding a cure for cancer in the rain forest is as believable as indians chewing on birch bark to cure a headache, This movie was critisized because of the stong NY accent of Lorraine Bracco. How would you have a 20+ year old book rat from New York, who has been a student for her entire life act when she falls off a cliff or meets a large snake face to face? So I think it was totally unfair to critisize a remarkable actress for doing the best she possibly could have for the role she was playing. As for Sean Connery, well....he is great in whatever he is in.

This movie is showing the importance of not destroying everything in the name of progress. We never know what we may destroy. Sean Connery looks as hot as he did in his James Bond days. His acting is amazing. Love him. Lorraing Bracco did an amazing job acting also. Wonderful movie.
