Based on the comic book miniseries by Alan Moore, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen takes place in an alternate universe where the characters of several literary classics exist in reality. As if that weren't enough, they've been assembled together in 1900 by Queen Victoria as a team of evil-fighting heroes. Among them are Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery) from H. Rider Haggard's King Solomon's Mines; Mina Harker (Peta Wilson) from Bram Stoker's Dracula; Tom Sawyer (Shane West) from several works by Mark Twain; Dorian Gray (Stuart Townsend) from Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray; Captain Nemo (Naseeruddin Shah) from Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea; The Invisible Man (Tony Curran) from H.G. Wells book of the same name; and several others. Working together, the odd assortment of characters must combine their powers to defeat a mysterious villain and save the world from certain destruction. Directed by Stephen Norrington (Blade), The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen also stars Jason Flemyng, Tom Goodman-Hill, and David Hemmings. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi
This was a nice return to old-style comics. Connery's Quartermaine was as good as any of the WW1 era comic heroes, drawing on the popular notion of the hunter-hero. Teamed with a collection of monsters, near-heroes and classic villans (all characters that would NOT have been acceptable back then), they re-paint how a classic hero team works. I really think this film will help to change the way that heroes are depicted, however, making them more human to us, so that we can relate to them more. The story-line is pretty much based on some of the fantastic sciences that were being predicted back during the WW1 period being presented here. Good pace, good tone with some light-hearted fun, strong characters and strong story... making for a film worth sitting the whole family down for.
I have to admit, I am a huge Sean Connery fan, so I might be biased! This is the second or third time I have seen this movie, and it seems I just can't get enough! I will probably watch it again soon! Excellent! Highly recommend it!

I really don't understand why the critics - with whom I usually agree - hated this movie so much. It's a lot of fun! Great characters, action, visuals, story...
Recommended.
I watched this with the kids. They liked it, but when we got to the "extra features" (interviews, making of etc.) there was a lot of bad language, even the "F" word, for goodness sake!
Ive never seen Sean Connery in a film that was not enhanced by his appearance but this farce filled with unknowns is by far one of the worst films I've ever seen,I couldn't finish watching it was that bad.
