Maximum Overdrive (1986)

Writer-director Stephen King falls short in his debut at the helm with Maximum Overdrive, an absurd tale about a radiation storm that somehow animates machines across the world, causing them to turn on their makers. The film focuses on a group of survivors held captive at the Dixie Boy Diner by a group of bad-tempered semis. Led by Emilio Estevez, the diner-goers do their impression of Ten Little Indians, waiting their turn until each gets bumped off one by one. There are holes in the plot big enough for the semis to drive through; for example, why don't the trucks run over the diner at the start of the film rather than wait for 90 minutes? ~ Jeremy Beday, Rovi

Look for the author early on in the movie, you will see him. (at the ATM) Be careful with children there is some gore but not enough to be excessive. It was even fun to see if you could catch all the terminal appliances as the boy rides his bike through town. Some will call the inconsistencies of the story a shortcoming. But those who have read Stephen King have come to realize that there is a certain dry humor to his work. This is no exception. After all, if the comet is supposed to animate mechanical devices, how does the valve on the fuel truck move or the rearview mirror (not motorized) adjust if there are no moving/mech parts to be animated? It becomes funny as long as you are not hung up on the technical. Laugh, be scared, jump and anticipate, and you will enjoy the film. And if you like AC/DC you will LOVE the soundtrack.

Honestly this was a pretty good film, considering machines are coming to life and killing people/enslaving them. My favorite part of this film is the crazy waitress who has a good couple flip out scenes where she starts screaming at the possessed cars. hehehe This film will keep you entertained, dont expect scares though.

Who wrote this worthless synopsis!? Sure Maximum Overdrive is not a cinematic masterpiece, but it is a very good movie. It makes us think about our modern lives, and how much we rely on machines. Sure you can point out that push mowers can't move on there own and other technical points, but that is just being nit picky and missing the point. BUY THE WAY--- The reason they did not run through the diner earlier is because they needed the humans inside. The lead truck kept them alive as long as it coud control them. I will not go into further detail because that will invole some spoilers, but it very easy to figure out if you pay any attention!

As with all of Stephen King's movies, this one was awesome. I rent this every so often and have seen it several times.

Might be a little low budget but just as finely done as classic flix like Evil Dead or Night of The Living Dead... only with posessed electronics and machines with homicidal tendancies! :-D

Come-on, it's in the same class as Repo Man - stupid, silly, plot full of holes - but I still like it! The various ways that the machines cause bloody mayhem is a laugh riot, and the heavy metal soundtrack (AC/DC, etc) rocks!

Future film makers take note, this is why there are directors and their are writers. Never should you let either of the two wear both hats.
