Max Dugan (Jason Robards Jr.) is an elderly ne'er-do-well whose tenuous mob connections have made him persona non grata with his daughter Marsha Mason. Struggling to raise her restless son Matthew Broderick on her own, Mason is none too pleased when Max returns to the family fold with yet another portfolio of get-rich-quick schemes. Forced to leave town due to the investigative habits of cop Donald Sutherland, Mason's new boyfriend, Max does one last good deed to renew the faith of the disillusioned-with-life Broderick. Watch for Donald Sutherland's son Kiefer in his film debut, and for former Kansas City Royals' batting coach Charlie Lau in the baseball-game finale. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I have always loved this movie. Now that I have children, I wanted to share it with them. They really liked it! -For the person who wants to make a big deal of taking the lords name in vain etc. etc. I say "I'm glad you don't hear what they hear in ONE day of school! Because you couldn't take it!" I watched this WITH my children & explained things & other things I let go. They know right from wrong. We just enjoyed & laughed!

This is a great movie. I've seen it a dozen times over the years. Wonderful acting and a wonderful plot. IIt's funny and heartwarming. It does use the Lord's name in vain a couple of times, and there is one scene where some kids are smoking. If you were shocked by this then you didn't pay attention to the PG RATING. Of course I wouldn't watch it with my 3-year-old granddaughter because of the language BUT she would be bored anyway. Kids over the age of 11 or 12 will enjoy it, if you can get them away from their totally violent video games. And there IS this thing called a "pause" button where you can remind them that cursing and smoking are wrong.

This was a pleasant enough movie. I found it rather dated, though. Jason Robards, Jr. was excellent as the rogue father and grandfather.

I liked this very much years ago, and I liked it again. I have single mom friends so I can relate to some of Martha's characters difficulties. Her Dad (Jason playing Max) has been out of her life for years and he shows up to help her in some ways, but complicates her life in others and her new boyfriend (Donald Sutherland, 1 of my favorite actors) is a suspicious police officer. Humor! 4

I really enjoyed this movie when I was a kid and now I just saw it again. Jason Robards is charming as Max Dugan and it's a very sweet story. I hesitated to show it to my kids though because there's a scene where Matthew Broderick is smoking and he is still in highschool. I forgot how smoking used to be so accepted back then. Overall, a real feel good movie.

max dugan returns is a movie i remembered seeing and liking, i thought it would be a great movie to watch with my 11 yr. old daughter. sadly, within minutes and the blasting of the Lords Name in vain, i decided to forego this movie.

I picked this movie for my family to watch based on the suitable for children and the PG rating. Maybe I don’t understand how the ratings work - in the first 5 minutes of the movie the Lords name was taken in vain 3x and a man was called "illegitimate" only not is such an appropriate way. I guess I should have read closer but the rating is only PG, not PG-13 and it does say suitable for children. Concerned parents please be careful. There is no closed captioning so a language filter box won’t work.
