Kevin Costner stars in and directs the Western Open Range. Robert Duvall stars as Boss Spearman, a rugged old-timer who free-grazes cattle. He and Charley Waite (Costner) have been partners for ten years. As the film opens in the 1880s, the pair and their employees -- the beefy, rugged, likable Mose (Abraham Benrubi) and the impetuous Mexican teenager Buttons (Diego Luna) -- are driving cattle across the West. Mose is attacked and thrown in jail during a visit to a town. The local cattle rancher Baxter (Michael Gambon) wants the free grazers off his land and warns Charley and Boss when they retrieve Mose that they have until the next day to be out of the area. Boss decides to fight back, especially after Baxter's men do harm to the foursome. Charley confesses his past as a killer during the Civil War and strikes up a tentative romance with Sue Barlow -- the sister of the town doctor. The film's centerpiece is an extended gunfight between the duo (with some assistance from sympathetic townsfolk) and Baxter's hired gunmen. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

Decided to review this after I just finished watching the ending again. Pundits having been saying the Western is dead for years. They are wrong, as Open Range demonstrates. Granted, modern sensibilities have made filming an effective Western more difficult, but if you have a good story, good acting, and good direction, you are in good shape. Open Range has all of these. What is truly remarkable is that this movie focuses on character more than plot and action (though the ending provides plenty of that), and yet manages to remain extremely compelling. Robert Ducall, as always, is in a class by himself, and Kevin Costner and Annette Benning turn in star performances as well. Overall, a fantastic film to watch.

This is one of the best westerns I have ever seen! I have yet to see a Kevin Costner directed film that I did not like. The acting was perfect and the story was great. This is a slow thought provoking character study. That is until the final scene. One of the best shoot out scenes I have ever seen . Overall, beautiful scenery is combined with a great story, great characters, and great acting. See this! 9.5/10

A little shawshank redemption friendship with a bit of spaghetti western without all the messy sauce. Loved it...one of my top 10 for sure.

Though there are some fine performances in several scenes, as westerns go this had far too many lulls between scenes. The Costner/Duvall team was a nice one though. Nice to see Michael Jeter in this in a role a little diferent for him and? A great shoot-out towards the end that earns it's stars here.

A couple of people told me this was a great movie, and I read the reviews (which are mixed), so I decided to give another over-hyped Costner movie a try. Aargh!!! Long, boring, predictable, and many times cheesy. Duvall and Bening were ok, but Costner is an over-hyped actor. Having watched a lot of Westerns, this one wasn't very good at all. And it really could have lasted only 30 minutes to get the whole story in. The rest was filler. Go ahead and try it, but have a crossword to do or something.
